<strong>aerodromes</strong>.<br />
However, <strong>the</strong> actions <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual pilots always dictate <strong>the</strong> overall safety <strong>of</strong><br />
operations at <strong>the</strong>se <strong>aerodromes</strong>. The ATSB reiterates <strong>the</strong> need for pilots to:<br />
• improve <strong>the</strong>ir situational awareness, and ensure awareness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir presence by<br />
o<strong>the</strong>rs us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>se <strong>aerodromes</strong><br />
• reduce <strong>the</strong> frequency <strong>of</strong> common occurrence types <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> vic<strong>in</strong>ity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se<br />
<strong>aerodromes</strong> such as:<br />
– <strong>in</strong>effective communication between pilots<br />
– reduced separation between aircraft<br />
– <strong>in</strong>correct assessment <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r aircrafts’ positions and <strong>in</strong>tentions<br />
– rely<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> radio as a substitute for an effective visual lookout<br />
– fail<strong>in</strong>g to follow published procedures<br />
• be aware <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir responsibilities when operat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> vic<strong>in</strong>ity <strong>of</strong> <strong>non</strong>-<strong>towered</strong><br />
<strong>aerodromes</strong> by be<strong>in</strong>g familiar with <strong>the</strong> CAR 166 <strong>non</strong>-<strong>towered</strong> aerodrome<br />
procedures, through CAAPs 166-1 and 166-2.<br />
Non-<strong>towered</strong> <strong>aerodromes</strong> and <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> CTAF have been, and will cont<strong>in</strong>ue to be a<br />
central component to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Australian</strong> airspace system. Operations to, from, and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
vic<strong>in</strong>ity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se <strong>aerodromes</strong> will rema<strong>in</strong> safe and efficient with good airmanship,<br />
use <strong>of</strong> see-and-avoid strategies, and effective monitor<strong>in</strong>g/broadcast<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> CTAF<br />
by pilots. Ongo<strong>in</strong>g monitor<strong>in</strong>g by CASA <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> effectiveness <strong>of</strong> <strong>non</strong>-<strong>towered</strong><br />
aerodrome procedures and radio/broadcast requirements also plays an important<br />
role; as does <strong>in</strong>vestigation by <strong>the</strong> ATSB <strong>in</strong> cases where accidents and serious<br />
<strong>in</strong>cidents occur at <strong>non</strong>-<strong>towered</strong> <strong>aerodromes</strong>.<br />
