One airprox occurred between two passenger transport aircraft operat<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>non</strong><strong>towered</strong><br />

<strong>aerodromes</strong> where a high collision risk existed:<br />

Occurrence number 200705097<br />

At 0755 local time on 26 July 2007, a Fokker 50 aircraft was complet<strong>in</strong>g a turn on to f<strong>in</strong>al for<br />

runway 24 at Olympic Dam Aerodrome, SA at about 850 ft above ground level (AGL) when<br />

<strong>the</strong> flight crew were alerted by <strong>the</strong> Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) to a Fairchild<br />

Metrol<strong>in</strong>er aircraft depart<strong>in</strong>g from runway 06. The crew estimated that <strong>the</strong> distance between<br />

<strong>the</strong> two aircraft was about 200 ft laterally and 30 ft <strong>of</strong> vertically.<br />

The Fokker 50 was on a scheduled flight from Adelaide to Olympic Dam with 32<br />

passengers and five crew on board. The Metrol<strong>in</strong>er was depart<strong>in</strong>g Olympic Dam for<br />

Adelaide on a charter flight with 11 passengers and one pilot.<br />

An <strong>in</strong>vestigation <strong>of</strong> this occurrence by <strong>the</strong> Civil Aviation <strong>Safety</strong> Authority (CASA) determ<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

that <strong>the</strong> Fokker 50 made <strong>the</strong> required circuit broadcasts on <strong>the</strong> Common Traffic Advisory<br />

Frequency (CTAF), and that <strong>the</strong>se were heard by ano<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>bound aircraft, but not by <strong>the</strong><br />

Metrol<strong>in</strong>er pilot. The pilot-<strong>in</strong>-command <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Metrol<strong>in</strong>er claimed to have made <strong>the</strong> required<br />

broadcasts on <strong>the</strong> CTAF at <strong>the</strong> commencement <strong>of</strong> taxi<strong>in</strong>g, enter<strong>in</strong>g, backtrack<strong>in</strong>g along <strong>the</strong><br />

runway, and roll<strong>in</strong>g. None <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se broadcasts were received by <strong>the</strong> Fokker 50 or <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

<strong>in</strong>bound aircraft.<br />

The <strong>in</strong>vestigation also noted that it would have been difficult for <strong>the</strong> Metrol<strong>in</strong>er pilot to see<br />

<strong>the</strong> approach<strong>in</strong>g Fokker 50 as he was look<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> ris<strong>in</strong>g sun, and that it would have<br />

been difficult for <strong>the</strong> Fokker 50 crew to see <strong>the</strong> Metrol<strong>in</strong>er while it was on <strong>the</strong> ground, as <strong>the</strong><br />

Fokker 50 was turn<strong>in</strong>g away from <strong>the</strong> runway as it jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> circuit on downw<strong>in</strong>d.<br />

It could not determ<strong>in</strong>e why <strong>the</strong> pilot <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Metrol<strong>in</strong>er was unable to receive <strong>the</strong> broadcasts<br />

from <strong>the</strong> Fokker 50 aircraft.<br />
