Figure 1: Airspace-use and operational-related occurrences <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> vic<strong>in</strong>ity <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>non</strong>-<strong>towered</strong> <strong>aerodromes</strong> <strong>in</strong> Australia, 2003 to 2008<br />
There was a significant <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> occurrences <strong>in</strong> 2008 (as shown <strong>in</strong> Figure 1).<br />
Fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>vestigation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> data revealed that as a proportion <strong>of</strong> total occurrences <strong>in</strong><br />
2008 compared to earlier years, <strong>the</strong>re were no significant changes <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> most<br />
common five occurrence types, <strong>the</strong> location <strong>of</strong> occurrences, or <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>volvement <strong>of</strong><br />
RPT aircraft <strong>in</strong> occurrences. The reason for this spike could not be determ<strong>in</strong>ed, but it<br />
is at least partially due to an <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> report<strong>in</strong>g levels <strong>of</strong> airspace-related and<br />
operational-related <strong>in</strong>cidents by pilots.<br />
It is also <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g to note that <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>troduction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> National Airspace System<br />
(NAS 2C) <strong>non</strong>-<strong>towered</strong> aerodrome procedures <strong>in</strong> November 2005 did not affect <strong>the</strong><br />
number <strong>of</strong> occurrences reported to <strong>the</strong> ATSB. Any effects <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>troduction <strong>of</strong> NAS<br />
2C would expect to have been seen with<strong>in</strong> 18 months <strong>of</strong> November 2005; however,<br />
<strong>the</strong>re was no significant change <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> occurrences reported.<br />
3.1 Accidents, <strong>in</strong>cidents, and serious <strong>in</strong>cidents near <strong>non</strong><strong>towered</strong><br />
<strong>aerodromes</strong><br />
Almost all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> occurrences dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> report<strong>in</strong>g period were <strong>in</strong>cidents. No <strong>in</strong>juries<br />
were reported <strong>in</strong> any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> occurrences classified as <strong>in</strong>cidents. However, a proportion<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se <strong>in</strong>cidents were serious <strong>in</strong> nature (n=60) and were classified as serious<br />
<strong>in</strong>cidents. Serious <strong>in</strong>cidents are <strong>in</strong>cidents where circumstances <strong>in</strong>dicated that an<br />
accident nearly occurred.<br />
There were six accidents related to airspace use and separation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> vic<strong>in</strong>ity <strong>of</strong> <strong>non</strong><strong>towered</strong><br />
<strong>aerodromes</strong>. Four <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se accidents were mid-air collisions – two <strong>in</strong>volved<br />
collisions between agricultural aircraft or gliders conduct<strong>in</strong>g manoeuvr<strong>in</strong>g near <strong>the</strong><br />
aerodrome (crop spray<strong>in</strong>g, soar<strong>in</strong>g etc.) The rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g two mid-air collisions<br />
occurred between general aviation (GA) aircraft on approach or operat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
circuit.<br />
