In November 2009, follow<strong>in</strong>g an airspace review by <strong>the</strong> Office <strong>of</strong> Airspace<br />

Regulation (OAR), CASA announced that Broome Aerodrome was to receive a<br />

permanent air traffic service. A certified air/ground radio operator (CA/GRS)<br />

currently provides limited air traffic services (ATS) to pilots at Broome Aerodrome.<br />

Airservices Australia has also determ<strong>in</strong>ed that Karratha Aerodrome will receive a<br />

permanent air traffic service. As a result, Broome and Karratha will become<br />

controlled <strong>aerodromes</strong> on 18 November 2010 (Airservices Australia, 2009).<br />

8.2 Traffic mix at comparison group <strong>aerodromes</strong><br />

Different purposes for different <strong>aerodromes</strong><br />

Different <strong>aerodromes</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> comparison group have different purposes, and hence<br />

different movement patterns and traffic mixes. Some, such as Horn Island and<br />

Kununurra, display seasonal variations <strong>in</strong> movements, due to prevail<strong>in</strong>g wea<strong>the</strong>r<br />

conditions, m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g activities and resultant fly-<strong>in</strong> fly-out demand, and demand for air<br />

services <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> wet season.<br />

Most <strong>aerodromes</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> comparison group have seen a relatively steady number <strong>of</strong><br />

RPT movements s<strong>in</strong>ce 2003, with some exceptions. Avdata Australia movements<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation for <strong>the</strong> 6-year period showed that Groote Eylandt Aerodrome had<br />

approximately four times as many RPT movements <strong>in</strong> 2008 than <strong>in</strong> 2003, and Port<br />

Macquarie had a tw<strong>of</strong>old <strong>in</strong>crease. Conversely, Mount Gambier Aerodrome had<br />

approximately half as many RPT movements at <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 6-year report<strong>in</strong>g period.<br />

Armidale Aerodrome saw a tw<strong>of</strong>old <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> RPT movements between mid-2004<br />

and mid-2006, before reduc<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> long term average.<br />

A summary <strong>of</strong> movements by operation type and MTOW for each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al 20<br />

<strong>aerodromes</strong> selected <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> movement group (16 Avdata <strong>aerodromes</strong>, plus four <strong>non</strong>-<br />

Avdata <strong>aerodromes</strong> for which useful movement data could be obta<strong>in</strong>ed) is provided <strong>in</strong><br />
