Terra<strong>in</strong>, build<strong>in</strong>gs, or o<strong>the</strong>r man-made or natural features can also cause radio<br />
frequency <strong>in</strong>terference or isolated dead zones that can prevent clear transmissions on<br />
<strong>the</strong> CTAF if an aircraft is transit<strong>in</strong>g through that area. For example, a radio<br />
<strong>in</strong>terference problem was recently addressed at Broken Hill Aerodrome:<br />
Recently Broken Hill area had a hash problem on 126.7 MHz <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> vic<strong>in</strong>ity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
airfield, but aircraft could not hear <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terference on <strong>the</strong> ground. The fault was<br />
reported by Royal Fly<strong>in</strong>g Doctor Service aircraft and local flyers as occurr<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Northwest sector only. Airservices with <strong>the</strong> aid <strong>of</strong> this <strong>in</strong>formation was able to f<strong>in</strong>d<br />
<strong>the</strong> faulty transmitter, which was located near a large slag heap close to <strong>the</strong> airfield,<br />
thus caus<strong>in</strong>g a dead zone <strong>of</strong> hear<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> airfield. The lack <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terference<br />
occurr<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> airfield was a contribut<strong>in</strong>g factor <strong>in</strong> analys<strong>in</strong>g where <strong>the</strong> source<br />
emanated from. The transmitter was turned <strong>of</strong>f until repairs were carried out.<br />

In <strong>in</strong>stances where <strong>in</strong>terference is occurr<strong>in</strong>g, pilots should report <strong>the</strong> issue to<br />
Airservices Australia for fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>vestigation, and provide <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formation<br />
if possible:<br />
• <strong>the</strong> type <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terference, <strong>the</strong> signal strength, hash (electrical or mechanical<br />
sound<strong>in</strong>g) and tone (cont<strong>in</strong>uous or broken, and <strong>the</strong> repetition rate)<br />
• if broken or garbled audio can be dist<strong>in</strong>guished (AM/FM radio stations, ATC or<br />
taxi broadcasts)<br />
• <strong>the</strong> location <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> aircraft at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terference (latitude/longitude, bear<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
time, distance from distance measure equipment (DME) or runway threshold,<br />
altitude)<br />
• if o<strong>the</strong>r pilots were able to confirm <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terference<br />
• whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terference could be heard on <strong>the</strong> ground.<br />
This <strong>in</strong>formation allows Airservices Australia to identify <strong>the</strong> type, source, and<br />
location <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terference, and resolve <strong>the</strong> issue quickly.<br />
