<strong>PROFINET</strong> cable assembly work<br />

The next steps describe the generic steps <strong>for</strong> optical face cleaning of connectors<br />

• Use a lint free wipe moistened with isopropyl alcohol or optical quality<br />

cleaning fluid to clean the end faces. Rub lightly the ferule on the wipe.<br />

Always wipe in one direction not back <strong>and</strong> <strong>for</strong>th.<br />

• Re-inspect the end faces with a fiber optic video probe or a h<strong>and</strong> held fiber<br />

optic microscope <strong>and</strong> verify that the contamination has been removed.<br />

Refer to the <strong>for</strong>mer paragraph about inspection.<br />

• If the contamination is still present, after repeated attempts to clean the<br />

ferrules have failed, the contacts must re-polished or replaced. Polishing is<br />

a delicate step. It must be made by qualified persons. Contact the<br />

connector manufacturer.<br />

2.2.5 Fiber optic cable<br />

Glass or plastic fiber optic cables have a number of outst<strong>and</strong>ing properties:<br />

• Total immunity to electromagnetic interference.<br />

• Total electrical isolation of connected devices.<br />

• Largely tap-proof.<br />

• Extremely low attenuation when using glass fibers, there<strong>for</strong>e longer<br />

transmission distances.<br />

Due to these properties, they are particularly well suited <strong>for</strong>:<br />

• <strong>Cabling</strong> outside of buildings<br />

• Long distances<br />

• Environments subject to heavy electromagnetic interference<br />

The following categories exist<br />

• Glass fiber optic cables: single mode (SM) <strong>and</strong> multi mode (MM)<br />

• Plastic Cladded Fiber (PCF))<br />

• Plastic Optical Fiber (POF)<br />
