Communication<br />

In the case of <strong>PROFINET</strong>, the electronic transfer of digital data from one network<br />

user to another.<br />

DIN<br />

Deutsches Institut für Normung (German St<strong>and</strong>ardization Institute) ( www.din.de )<br />

EN (European St<strong>and</strong>ard)<br />

European St<strong>and</strong>ard acknowledged <strong>and</strong> applied by all European countries. Many of<br />

the IEC St<strong>and</strong>ards have been adopted as EN European st<strong>and</strong>ard.<br />

Hazard<br />

IEC 61508-4 Potential source of hazard. The term includes hazards to persons<br />

which arise within a short period (e.g. fire <strong>and</strong> explosions) also those which have a<br />

long-term effect on the health of a person (e.g. toxic waste).<br />

Glass fiber / optical fiber<br />

Transmission line made of glass or plastic to guide light waves. Optical Fibers are,<br />

other than copper cable, immune against electromagnetic interference <strong>and</strong> can<br />

cover larger distances.<br />
