Interest in invertebrates generally focuses on the readily observable groups: moths<br />

dragonflies, and spiders. <strong>Fen</strong>s can support the larval stages of specialist butterflies<br />

and moths, although the majority of fen specialist insects are small, taxonomically<br />

difficult and considered by some to be unappealing. Monitoring is likely to be<br />

directed toward those species that are rare or particularly valued.<br />

Information on monitoring techniques for specific species is available from a variety<br />

of sources. For example, Thompson et al (2003) covers the southern damselfly<br />
