modelled. Examples of process models which might be applied to fen sites include<br />

ground and surface water flow models.<br />

Modelling is complex and expensive, and should therefore only be carried out<br />

where the site management requires a high burden of proof. An example might<br />

be where relocation of a public water supply borehole is being considered, at a<br />

cost of millions of pounds, as was necessary to protect Smallburgh <strong>Fen</strong> which is a<br />

designated Natura 2000 site.<br />
