Initially, Pryor attempted to renege on NBC’s offer, but at the end of negotiations he agreed to make four episodes of his ten-episode contract. The conflict between the network and Pryor again symbolizes (as Redd Foxx’s problems did with NBC) the friction created when an African American performer who is unwilling to negotiate his beliefs confronts the narrow confines of acceptability in network television. Pryor’s increasing mainstream profile, his box office success, and album sales once again caught the eye of NBC. Network executives pursued the performer to host his own prime-time television
