Reading the Roots of Resistance 23 speaks for the majority. Television is definitely positioned as low culture, yet perhaps more than any other cultural medium television enters the lives of people on an everyday basis. To dismiss television as a “vast wasteland” is to ignore the participation and investment of everyday people in this cultural site, different modes of reading a text, and the presence of resistant culture within this mainstream forum.
24 2. Was the <strong>Revolution</strong> <strong>Televised</strong>? Network News and Black Journal The 1950s and 1960s proved to be a period of political upheaval in the United States, especially concerning African Americans. The fallout from the lack of racial progress in the post–World War II era fostered the rise of grass roots political organizations that began to confront the American “racial dictatorship” head on. At this time some of the political practices developed in all-black settings moved aboveground into the mainstream U.S. consciousness. 1 Television played a central role in this transition. One does not need to delve far into the American collective memory to access images of African American protesters in the 1960s. Television covered the everyday struggles witnessed in the lunch counter protests, store boycotts, and the very public March on Washington. Television witnessed the eventual rise of the Black Power movement, the urban revolts, and the public protest of runners Tommie Smith and John Carlos at the 1968 Olympics. The goal of this discussion is twofold: first, to illustrate how television, a medium in the process of transforming itself into a serious news vehicle, handled the challenge of covering the Civil Rights movement; and second, to analyze how television as a media source represented the rising Black Power movement to the American public, and therefore to analyze the role that nonfiction television played in negotiating the shift of these political movements into the public eye of mainstream America. I examine the myths of network news documentary practices, the differences between documentaries and the everyday news coverage, and finally the relevance of
