F: Mm-hmm. Alright. So we covered<br />

that angle <strong>of</strong> Lumumba's story.<br />

<strong>The</strong>n we went on with that other<br />

[painting] that follows. In other<br />

words, let's go back to Katanga<br />

[Painting 69: <strong>The</strong> Deaths <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Innocent Children].<br />

F: Now we see in the painting<br />

sixty-eight the death <strong>of</strong> the<br />

innocent. <strong>The</strong> innocent. We see the<br />

smoke stack and the slag heap, and<br />

a bridge.<br />

T: Right.<br />

F: And women...<br />

T: ... carrying these baskets on<br />

their heads.<br />

F: Mm-hmm.<br />

T: Yes.<br />

F: Are they are fleeing?<br />

T: <strong>The</strong>y are fleeing from the war.<br />

F: Where are they going?<br />

T: Some go to Kanyakaa, to a<br />

village [named after] a chief.<br />

F: Mm-hmm.<br />

T: That's where they fled. Others<br />

take to the bush.<br />

F: Mm-hmm.<br />

T: <strong>The</strong>re was suffering <strong>of</strong> every<br />

imaginable kind.<br />

F: Did they belong to all ethnic<br />

groups?<br />

T: <strong>The</strong>y belonged to every ethnic<br />

group in Katanga.<br />

F: Alright. Now, you said that<br />

some women -- their children<br />

were...<br />

T: Some women carried their child.<br />

F: It was a burden.<br />

T: Alright, [this woman] looked<br />

for a place to hide, the bullets<br />

where whistling and the child<br />

begins to cry. It got so far she<br />

would throw the child on the<br />

ground and run away. Or, when she<br />

went <strong>by</strong> the bridge there and the<br />

child would cry too much she would<br />

realize that the child was a<br />

burden, she would take it <strong>of</strong>f [her<br />

back] and throw it there into the<br />

water. She would...<br />

F: <strong>The</strong>y killed their own children?<br />

T: <strong>The</strong> very child she had given<br />

birth to. She would untie it from<br />

the wrap she was carrying it in<br />
