Then I saw Dave Chouinard. I grabbed him and pulled him close. “Dave, you
know who that is, don‟t you?”
He took a pull on his beer, then looked at me, his mouth drawn tight in that
special smile of his. “Yup. It‟s Dave Porter. He‟s gonna fuck you up, man. Bad.”

“About what? You want me to tell him you‟ll kick his ass if he doesn‟t shut the

Dave took another swig. “Lemme see what I can do.” With another glimpse of
that tight lipped smile, he walked over and started talking with Porter.
I went looking for my beer. All the girls were gone, but I knew, as a last ditch
plan, Carolyn would still be available. She was always available for me.
There‟s an add-on to the story. I believe it was one of my nobler deeds ever,
except for the Jim Chouinard event, which I‟ll tell you about in a moment.
It seems I kicked Ken‟s ass even worse than I thought. He even refused to go to
work the following Monday, and things really went downhill from there. He was totally
embarrassed, to the point he confided in a friend he was considering suicide.
I heard about it around Tuesday, I think, of the following week. That‟d be three
or four days, minimum, after the fight. When the guys told me, I honestly felt bad. I
mean, I was pissed that he‟d hit me, and really pissed when he kept me from getting laid,
