Bill Cady, The Early Years … by Bill Cady 291 Then I hit some cash flow problems. Too much partying. More of that than I had money to spend. Oh, what to do, what to do? I came upon a brilliant scheme. I‟d just steal it and then I‟d have enough money for the partying I wanted. My first mistake was the kind of stealing I was doing. My second was the way I did it. My third was where I did it. However, at times I‟ve been known to have a run of luck I really didn‟t deserve. This was one of those times. The other similar event was when Denny and I were mugging the girls‟ purses for almost two years. Only dumb luck kept us from getting caught, then bounced out of the parochial system, and probably right into juvenile detention. Lord knows I didn‟t need that. The courts, and Family Protective Services, had already forced me into three stints with a child psychologist, the first one when I was eight years old. If you can believe it, they actually tried to tell me I was doing wrong when I‟d hit that David thing, with or without a reason. I always acted like I was buying their line of bullshit for a few weeks, or even months, until they‟d say I was cured. Then, I‟d hurry home and smack that dumb little bastard for causing me all that goddamned grief. Little prick, anyway. My crimes were what‟s known as a B&E, Breaking and Entering, although I never “broke in”. Maybe that would‟ve reduced it to unlawful entry. Except. Yeah, there‟s always an “except”, right? I knew, since I helped build that first set of apartments, how to get in. I made a sort of master key and, if that didn‟t work, could often pick the locks. Better yet, a lot of people were so stupid, they‟d leave the apartment door unlocked and go to bed. Opportunity was knocking for Bill, but I never knocked on those doors. Bill Cady, The Early Years … by Bill Cady 292 The “except” part was the fact I always carried a weapon. Not just because of what I was doing, but from force of habit. I always had a switchblade in my early teen years, then a straight razor by age seventeen. For a while, most of the half year I was still in school as a junior and after, I also carried a gun. My “weapon of choice” was a .32 semiautomatic, a Davis P-32. Actually, it wasn‟t “my choice”, but “what I could get”. It was, I have to admit, better than no gun. Even better than a .22 caliber or .25 caliber, but those two aren‟t much better than fists. Neither will stop a man unless you unload the whole damned magazine or cylinder into him, and even that‟s kind of iffy. A .32 is a teeny-weeny bit better, but it most likely wouldn‟t stop some guy stoned on PCP or any other tough drug. It probably wouldn‟t even stop someone who‟s really drunk unless you scored a head shot. My piece had a total of six rounds, little tiny things, but I later recalled the way I was convinced to give it up after being shot three times with a .22, so maybe it wasn‟t completely crazy to carry it. Thankfully, I never shot anyone at least, not with that gun, I didn‟t. Still, since I even had that with me once in a while when I broke in to commit burglary, it would‟ve been an ugly felony if I‟d been caught. Robbery, as I was told, meant taking money off a person. Burglary meant taking things from a dwelling. Whether the dwelling was occupied at the time of the crime makes a monumental difference in the charges against the criminal. It‟s always better if there‟s no one present. There are degrees of burglary, and it seems mine was the worst. I was armed and Leviticus, Limited 33-0505963
