Noth<strong>of</strong>agus obliqua southern beech<br />

Handsome, deciduous tree, to 30-50 ft tall with good structure -- open with arching branches -- in maturity.<br />

Oval leaves are bluish above and paler beneath for that fl<strong>as</strong>hy bicolor effect. Toothed on the margins <strong>as</strong> well.<br />

The bark is silver-gray, resembling a true beech. Deciduous with autumn color in gold, orange, and even red.<br />

Best in sun to part shade. Accepting <strong>of</strong> summer water but tolerant <strong>of</strong> periods <strong>of</strong> summer drought. Frost hard<br />

in upper <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 7.<br />

Origanum 'Santa Cruz' hop-flowered oregano<br />

A chance garden-hybrid from the U.C. Santa Cruz Arboretum, lovely and low-growing, with blue-green,<br />

semi-evergreen foliage from which sprays <strong>of</strong> foot-long, arching flowers are produced in summer through fall,<br />

the tiny lavender petals peeking out from large, rosy pink bracts . Whew. Full sun and well-drained soil. Great<br />

for spilling over walls or containers. Cold hardy to 5F or so, mid <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 7.<br />

Osmanthus fragrans var. aurantiacus sweet olive<br />

The word "osmanthus" means fragrant flower and these shrubs are famous for their fragrance. Imagine warm<br />

ripe apricots on a summer evening and you will come close to the floral scent <strong>of</strong> this ancient Chinese<br />

selection. An evergreen shrub, to 10-12 ft tall x 6-8 ft wide, with shiny green leaves and, in autumn, clusters<br />

<strong>of</strong> small, orange-apricot colored, orange-scented flowers. Best in part shade in rich moist soil receiving regular<br />

summer water. Frost hardy to 5F, mid <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 7.<br />

Ozothamnus 'County Park Silver'<br />

Prostrate, silver-leaved shrub to only 2” tall but reaching 1 ft wide. Evergrey and handsome year-round in full<br />

sun and very well-drained soil -- say on a slope. Occ<strong>as</strong>ional summer water. Mid-summer flowers are<br />

insignificant.... Frost hardy in upper <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 7.<br />

Parahebe catarractae 'Delight'<br />

Hebe relative, shrub<strong>by</strong> to subshrub<strong>by</strong>, with white flowers with central violet spots from mid spring until frost.<br />

Half to full sun, regular water and well-drained soil. Might get 3 ft eventually, but it can be kept to under 2 ft.<br />

Shear after bloom to lengthen bloom period. Nice evergreen perennial. Hardy to 5F.<br />

Pittosporum illiciodes 'Fine Green'<br />

Another selection <strong>by</strong> Sean Hogan from Taiwanese collections <strong>by</strong> Dan Hinkley - P. illicioides DJHT 99079,<br />

this one chosen for its denser form, to only 5 ft or so, and ever-so-slightly smaller, narrow leaves that present a<br />

fine texture in the garden. An evergreen shrub with the same fragrant, white flowers in spring and, in autumn,<br />

very small, blue-black fruit in orange capsules. Best in light shade with regular summer water. Frost hardy in<br />

<strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 8 and expected in <strong>zone</strong> 7.<br />
