Begonia aff. acetosella T.A. 002<br />

This cane forming begonia collected <strong>by</strong> Tony Avent in northern Vietnam grows to between 2 and 3 ft in<br />

height with silky green triangular leaves, dark stems and m<strong>as</strong>ses <strong>of</strong> pale pink flowers from mid summer until<br />

frost. A most attractive shade loving shrub for the mild, damp garden or a lovely container specimen where<br />

temperatures regularly drop between 15 and 20 F. H<strong>as</strong> proven root-hardy in the southe<strong>as</strong>tern US to below 10F<br />

if winter mulched. Yet another addition to the growing numbers <strong>of</strong> hardy garden species. Frost hardy in<br />

<strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 8.<br />

Beschorneria albiflora<br />

One <strong>of</strong> the larger members <strong>of</strong> this genus <strong>of</strong> agave relatives from northe<strong>as</strong>tern Mexico growing amid oaks,<br />

pines, and many other delicious plants. This species forms open rosettes <strong>of</strong> pale green leaves, to about 3 ft,<br />

with bright red, branched flower stalks rising to 6 ft or more, the pendulous flowers <strong>of</strong>ten red at the b<strong>as</strong>e and<br />

very pale green, indeed nearly white, at the tips <strong>of</strong> the sepals. Prefers some summer water where dry. H<strong>as</strong><br />

performed admirably in our garden in dappled shade and should be frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 8, to about 15F<br />

with no leaf damage, resprouting in spring from 10F or so.<br />

Beschorneria decosteriana<br />

One <strong>of</strong> the more robust species <strong>of</strong> this agave relative, this collection is from the high mountains <strong>of</strong><br />

northe<strong>as</strong>tern Mexico, growing in the shade <strong>of</strong> oaks and pines. Leave are 5" wide in rosettes, each stretching to<br />

over 3 ft. And flower spikes are 6 ft tall or more with <strong>as</strong>toundingly red stems, red and green flowers, and pinkblushed<br />

seed pods! Drought tolerant but loves a little summer water. A bold-textured garden plant in dappled<br />

shade to full sun where temperatures seldom drop below 15F, mid <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 8. Plants have recovered<br />

quickly from temperatures <strong>as</strong> low <strong>as</strong> single digits, <strong>zone</strong> 7, provided good drainage and a wee bit <strong>of</strong> overhead<br />

protection.<br />

Billbergia nutans 'Blondie' friendship plant<br />

A variation on a variation with entirely creamy yellow leaves on a perennial to 18" <strong>by</strong> 3 ft. This "friendship"<br />

plant, in our gardens since Victorian times, is a good part shade to shade perennial in upper <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 8 and<br />

makes an ideal container plant where temperatures regularly drop below 15F, mid <strong>zone</strong> 8. Keep moist...and<br />

prosper. Named <strong>by</strong> Luen Miller.<br />

Brachyglottis 'Crustii'<br />

A true backbone shrub, this evergreen small mounding shrub, to 3-4 ft, gleams all year long. From a<br />

wonderful group <strong>of</strong> hybrids originating in New Zealand and slow to make it to North America. This h<strong>as</strong><br />

gently fluted, rounded leaves <strong>of</strong> silver gray, and yellow flowers, quite clippable. Somewhat drought tolerant<br />

but summer water is accepted. Frost hardy to 10F - <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 8.<br />
