Upright, very evergreen conifer, very like its close relation but with golden leaves, giving a brighter<br />

appearance over all. A great vertical accent in the garden. Slow growing -- say 15 ft in your lifetime -- with<br />

crowded upright branches forming a dense, narrow column. Accepts hard pruning. Drought tolerant but best<br />

in sun to part shade with regular summer water. Frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 6.<br />

Lovely, tall, deciduous tree, native to China and much <strong>of</strong> Asia, with pinnate foliage emerging pink and aging<br />

through light yellow to bright green. Foliage is fragrant <strong>as</strong> are the lush, midsummer panicles <strong>of</strong> creamy white<br />

flowers. Peeling brown bark adds interest. F<strong>as</strong>t growing to 20+ ft in the garden, Enjoys heat, so sun to part<br />

shade with normal summer water. Frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> Zone 6.<br />

Wonderful evergreen, a large shrub to small tree, closely related to the aralia family. To 10-20 ft tall x 10-15<br />

ft wide with branches that radiate from the trunk like spokes <strong>of</strong> a wheel and very glossy leaves with bronzy<br />

new growth and somewhat furry undersides. Flowers are bright green in spring. Slow growing and happy in<br />

part sun out <strong>of</strong> afternoon sun in hot climates. Needs well-drained soil and consistent summer water. Frost<br />

hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 6.<br />

Striking, tuberous Araceae, the spring flowers (spathe) mottled in fleshy pink to metallic maroon and followed<br />

<strong>by</strong> an attractive, single leaf on a 2-3 ft petiole. Stunning, especially in flower. Very tropical. Also aromatic,<br />

redolent <strong>of</strong> fly-attracting odors that can be mitigated <strong>by</strong> a spray <strong>of</strong> water or left to work their own kind <strong>of</strong><br />

magic. Best in half sun with regular summer water. Frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 6.<br />
