Magnolia tamaulipana 'Bronze Sentinel'<br />
Fabulous early 90s discovery in the cloud forest <strong>of</strong> the Sierra Madre Oriental <strong>by</strong> the Yucca Do boys, this bold<br />
textured evergreen, to 30-40 ft x a relatively narrow 10 ft or so,-h<strong>as</strong> green leaves with bronze tones that turn<br />
bronze-purple in cooler weather. White flowers appear in spring and early summer. For sun to part shade with<br />
summer moisture. Cold hardy to between 0 and 10F, <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 7, possibly slightly colder.<br />

Mahonia gracilipes<br />
Peek at the leaf undersides in brilliant white and fall in love. This rare Chinese evergreen mahonia, introduced<br />
into western horticulture in 1980 <strong>by</strong> Roy Lanc<strong>as</strong>ter, h<strong>as</strong> graceful, blue-green, compound leaves, indeed bright<br />
white on the undersides, and, in summer, sprays <strong>of</strong> pretty, delicate flowers with purple-red petals and ivory<br />
interiors. Sturdy and choice. Native to shady limestone cliffs, though it’s quite happy in garden conditions in<br />
full sun with moist soil to nearly full shade. Can reach about 6 ft high x 5 ft wide eventually. Frost hardy in<br />
<strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 7.<br />

Mahonia x media 'Winter Sun'<br />
Tall, striking evergreen, to 10 ft x 7 ft but e<strong>as</strong>ily kept smaller. Leaves are dark green, radiating from the stem<br />
in whorls. Late fall, early winter yellow flowers are abundant in upstanding inflorescens, more frangrant than<br />
close relatives. By fall, there are black berries. Drought tolerant once established but should be watered for a<br />
se<strong>as</strong>on or two. Frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 7.<br />

Maytenus boaria 'Green Showers'<br />
Evergreen tree, to 30 ft tall and wide over time, with a weeping habit and bright green, dense foliage, the<br />
leaves finely toothed. Flowers are small but fragrant, green and star-shaped in summer, and followed <strong>by</strong> a few<br />
red berries in this femal form. Grows f<strong>as</strong>test in good garden loam, up to two feet per year. Should be watered<br />
deeply every two weeks to encourage deep roots and discourage suckering. Best without mulch. Frost hardy<br />
in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 7.<br />

Melicytus cr<strong>as</strong>sifolius<br />
A sculptural shrub in the Viola family (believe it or not!) from New Zealand. To 3’ or so with fine-tipped<br />
divaricating branches and small glossy green leaves. Each stem becomes adorned with white-pale lavender<br />
flowers followed <strong>by</strong> translucent berries. Good for architectual specimen containers and rock gardens. Reg<br />
summer water, bright light, hardy to 10 degrees.<br />

Morus alba 'Chapparal' white mulberry<br />
We feel this is the best weeping mulberry, with filigreed leaves on weeping stems with silvery bark e<strong>as</strong>ily<br />
trained to 6-10 ft. Striking when allowed to spill over a structure. Quite summer drought tolerant and frost<br />
hardy to the bottom <strong>of</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 7 or even colder. Full sun to dappled shade.<br />
