Maganolia grandiflora 'Samuel Sommer'<br />

Medium sized form <strong>of</strong> the evergreen, southern magnolia, this one growing quickly, eventually reaching 35-50<br />

ft tall x 20-30 ft wide, dense and upright with a smooth, oval crown. Leaves are shiny, dark green, with red<br />

indumentum on the undersides. Spring flowers are particularly showy, large, cup-shaped and fragrant. Does<br />

well in sun to part shade with regular summer water until well established. Not recommended for parking<br />

strips because <strong>of</strong> root inv<strong>as</strong>ions. Frost hardy to 0F, <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 7.<br />

Magnolia grandiflora 'Saint Mary'<br />

Compact form <strong>of</strong> the southern magnolia, eventually to 20-25 ft tall with densely held branches forming a<br />

pyramidal shape. Perfect small tree for the small to medium garden. Shiny green leaves have bronze<br />

indumentum (think fur) on the undersides. Spring flowers are white and sweetly fragrant. Enjoys full sun to<br />

part shade with regular summer water at le<strong>as</strong>t until well established. Tolerant <strong>of</strong> dampish places and said to be<br />

deer resistant. Frost hardy to 0F, <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 7.<br />

Medium sized evergreen magnolia, with leaves typical <strong>of</strong> the species -- dark and shiny above with orange,<br />

fuzzy undersides -- and long-l<strong>as</strong>ting flowers typically cup-shaped but especially large and fragrant. Medium<br />

tree, to 20-40 ft tall x 15-30 ft wide, flowering in mid-summer. Tolerates full sun to part shade and little<br />

summer water once established. A striking focal point or street tree. Frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 7.<br />

Recently known <strong>as</strong> M. dianica and previously Michelia yunnanensis; fabulous <strong>by</strong> any name. This selection,<br />

originally from seedlings from the Kunming area <strong>of</strong> China, w<strong>as</strong> made <strong>by</strong> plantsman Nevin Smith for its<br />

compact habit, to 4-6 ft, and abundant white flowers occurring from late winter to mid spring when their<br />

fragrance can be experienced from some distance. Cultivation <strong>as</strong> for its kin with consistent moisture and<br />

nutrition, decent drainage and dappled shade to full sun. Frost hardy in upper <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 7.<br />
