Luma apiculata<br />

From a delightful South American genus <strong>of</strong> myrtaceous shrubs and small trees, this one reaching 8-12 ft with<br />

shiny round leaves, honey scented white flowers and reddish to purplish to black fruit <strong>of</strong>ten used in preserves<br />

and eating out <strong>of</strong> hand. One <strong>of</strong> the most striking features is the white, cream, and pink patterns that develops<br />

on the trunks <strong>as</strong> plants age. Often found growing nearly in small creeks but able <strong>as</strong> well to withstand drought.<br />

This form w<strong>as</strong> collected in southern Chile and should be among the hardier <strong>of</strong> the group withstanding low<br />

teens F, mid <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 8, with no damage. Where temperatures are likely to fall lower, place out <strong>of</strong> wind or<br />

possibly consider moving to a better climate.<br />

Lyonothamnus floribundus var. <strong>as</strong>pleniifolius catalina ironwood<br />

Lacy, evergreen foliage and cool, honey-brown peeling bark set this California native apart. A large shrub or<br />

small tree, to 15 ft, it h<strong>as</strong> large, Sorbus-like, white flower clusters. Best in full sun, with little summer water.<br />

Melianthus major honeybush<br />

Bold foliage perennial for the border. Feathery and toothed, blue-green leaves and huge combs <strong>of</strong> brown-red<br />

flowers dripping nectar in summer. Honeybush indeed. T o 6 x 6 ft. May be deciduous in a rough winter, but<br />

will come back. Best in sun and well-drained soil with regular moisture. Frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 8.<br />

Bold foliage perennial for the border, this form from the garden <strong>of</strong> plantswoman Ginny Hunt, with feathery<br />

and toothed, blue-green leaves and huge combs <strong>of</strong> maroon flowers dripping nectar in summer. Honey bush<br />

indeed. T o 6 ft tall and wide, possibly taller. May be deciduous in a rough winter, but comes back. Best in<br />

sun and well-drained soil with occ<strong>as</strong>ional summer moisture. Frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 8.<br />

Mimulus aurantiacus 'Jeff's Tangerine'<br />

Of all the West Co<strong>as</strong>t natives, the shrub<strong>by</strong> monkey flowers have some <strong>of</strong> the most to <strong>of</strong>fer. Evergreen, to<br />

about 4 ft or more in the wild, with flowers ranging from butter yellow to oranges to even deep pink.<br />

Mimulus a. 'Jeff's Tangerine' came <strong>as</strong> a seedling in our friend Jeff Rooney's garden. The flowers are a<br />

ple<strong>as</strong>ing, yes, tangerine color, with an orange throat and a little creamy yellow around the margins. In years<br />

<strong>of</strong> light frost it h<strong>as</strong> flowered year round, though in the winter cold spell <strong>of</strong> 2004, temperatures in the low 20s F<br />

knocked the flowers <strong>of</strong>f but did little to thwart its luxurious growth. Able to withstand summer drought, it will<br />

happily go dormant until fall rains begin. Also tolerant <strong>of</strong> re<strong>as</strong>onable garden water if soil is well drained and<br />

light is bright, flowering year-round in mid <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 8 or above. Otherwise a fine pot specimen or<br />

se<strong>as</strong>onal addition to containers.<br />
