Cupressus sempervirens 'Totem'<br />

Obsessively upright, pencil-thin Italian cypress used for an exclamation point in the garden. Smaller in all<br />

respects than the species; to 15 ft tall or so <strong>by</strong> 1 ft wide. Full sun, well-drained soil, and very little summer<br />

water. Cold hardy to <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 7.<br />

Cynara scolymus 'Green Globe' green globe artichoke<br />

Silver-blue-gray leaves, finely cut and arching to create a fountain like form -- f<strong>as</strong>t growing and vigorous<br />

producing tender artichokes, the edible flower buds that, if left, open to incredible purple, thistle-like flowers!<br />

To 4 ft tall <strong>by</strong> 6-8 ft wide. Full sun and water to establish. Drought tolerant thereafter. Frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong><br />

<strong>zone</strong> 7.<br />

Cyrtanthus breviflorus - bright yellow<br />

A robust form from the Drakensburg Mountains <strong>of</strong> South Africa, collected <strong>by</strong> plantsman Panayoti Kelaidis,<br />

with strap-like leaves emerging in spring followed <strong>by</strong> yellow trumpets that first look a bit like daffodils. Best<br />

in bright conditions and well-drained but summer-damp soil. Frost hardy to at le<strong>as</strong>t 0 and 10F, <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 7.<br />

Have proven hardy in the ground in Colorada. Stunning pot specimen.<br />

Cyrtanthus mackenii - yellow<br />

From a beautiful genus -- akin to a red agapanthus -- springing forth with leaves emerging in late spring and<br />

dangly flowers, usually orange, but dazzlingly golden yellow in this form. To 12-18" for bright conditions and<br />

well drained but summer damp soil. As its high, Drakensburg Mtn., South Africa, habitat suggests, hardy to<br />

between 0 and 10F, <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 7, if well mulched. Stunning pot specimen.<br />

4D @ $14 Amaryllidaceae<br />

Daphne odora 'Marginata'<br />

Flowering in late winter with very fragrant pink flowers that open from magenta buds, this is a dense<br />

mounding shrub, to 4 x 4 ft, with nicely variegated evergreen foliage. Good for late winter cheer! Sun, good<br />

drainage, and summer water. Cold hardy to <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 7.<br />

D<strong>as</strong>ylirion wheeleri blue sotol, desert spoon<br />

The best known and one <strong>of</strong> the more spectacular <strong>of</strong> the genus, these trunk-forming denizens <strong>of</strong> southe<strong>as</strong>t<br />

Arizona to southern New Mexico and south into Sonora can grow <strong>as</strong> tall <strong>as</strong> 8 ft with 4-5 ft rosettes <strong>of</strong> very<br />

pretty gray-blue, adorned with small golden teeth and threadlike filifers at the leaf ends. Beautiful when back<br />

lit. Not fussy about water or soil though would rather not sit in winter wet. Great container specimens. This<br />

high elevation collection from southe<strong>as</strong>tern Arizona should be frost hardy into the 0 to 10F range, <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong><br />

7, especially in bright light with good air circulation and very well-drained soil. Said to be deer resistant.<br />
