Upright, solid-caned, well mannered, clumping bamboo with “bottlebrush” branch arrangement. To 8-10 ft<br />

tall. New shoots are a breathtaking red, pink and green fading to white. For sun and summer water. Frost<br />

hardy to 0F, <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 7. From Chile, there are ideal <strong>as</strong> specimen plants or statements in a South American<br />

design.<br />

Clerodendrum trichotomum 'Carnival' variegated glory bower<br />

In all our travels we have never seen this plant used better <strong>as</strong> a street tree than in Portland. In August the<br />

heavy fragrance <strong>of</strong> the white flowers dances through the streets, especially at night. Flower color is enhanced<br />

<strong>by</strong> the variegated foliage, green edged in cream and white, and turquoise berries framed <strong>by</strong> crimson bracts that<br />

add to its fall fun. To 10 ft tall or so. Choice. Frost hardy to 0F, <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 7.<br />

Clerodendrum trichotomum 'Golden Glory' glorybower<br />

Though having much the same shape <strong>as</strong> the species, this slightly smaller cultivar, to 10-12 ft with umbrella<br />

form, h<strong>as</strong> striking golden leaves <strong>of</strong>ten tinted orange when emerging and fading to spring green in mid to late<br />

se<strong>as</strong>on. Fragrant white flowers appear in mid to late summer followed <strong>by</strong> metallic blue, red-bracted fruit. A<br />

handsome addition to the garden in bright light for best color and at le<strong>as</strong>t occ<strong>as</strong>ional summer water where dry.<br />

Can colonize with root disturbance - a good or bad thing. Frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 7.<br />

Clerodendrum trichotomum 'Spring Purple'<br />

A purple-flushed leaf form <strong>of</strong> the cl<strong>as</strong>sic harlequin glory bower. This form found in an old Portland garden<br />

courtyard <strong>by</strong> Josh McCollough. Having slightly smaller leaves with great purple coloring in the spring, slowly<br />

greening with more purple returning on new growth in summer. Likely the variety; C. trichotomum var.<br />

fargesii. A good street tree for Portland, though seldom used, with sweet smelling, white flowers in late<br />

summer, perfuming the neighborhood especially at night. Turquoise berries framed <strong>by</strong> crimson bracts add to<br />

fall fun. Foliage is aromatic <strong>as</strong> well -- think peanut butter. To 10 ft tall or so in full sun for best flowers and<br />

fruits and water occ<strong>as</strong>ionally in summer. Planting in reach <strong>of</strong> a lawn mower eliminates pesky suckers. E<strong>as</strong>ily<br />

frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 7.<br />

Cleyera japonica 'Tricolor'<br />

A striking, tea family member growing to about 6 ft tall and wide with horizontal branches and narrow,<br />

evergreen leaves, emerging pinky red, edged and marbled in platinum, white, and salmon. Sweetly scented,<br />

creamy white flowers appear in spring. Does well in sun to part shade with regular summer moisture. Cold<br />

hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 7.<br />
