Evergreen fern with bright green, leathery, tongue-shaped fronds forming erect clumps up to 1-1.5 ft tall and<br />

wide. This European native for part to full shade is best grown in rich, very well-drained soil with average<br />

summer moisture. Thrives in alkaline, limestone soils <strong>as</strong> well. Frost hardy to -20F, <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 5.<br />

Berberis replicata<br />

This clone from the UK via Western Hills <strong>Nursery</strong> is perhaps more bronze leaved that the wild species.<br />

Evergreen, arching shrub, to 3 ft tall, with yellow spines, pale yellow flowers in late spring, and red berries<br />

ripening to black in autumn. Handsome foliage. For full to part sun in well-drained soil and average summer<br />

water. Frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 5.<br />

Blechnum spicant deer fern<br />

Native to Europe and western North America, this tough fern h<strong>as</strong> shiny, evergreen foliage reaching to about<br />

18” x 2 ft wide. Best in part to full shade in rich soil with average moisture. Somewhat drought tolerant once<br />

established. Spreads <strong>by</strong> creeping rhizomes that can be divided in the spring. Frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 5.<br />

Bupleurum spinosum spiny hare's ear<br />

This is one <strong>of</strong> the smaller bupleurum species, forming a small mound <strong>of</strong> dense, evergreen foliage, blue-green<br />

and spine-tipped, remaining under 2 ft tall. In spring plants are covered with angular sprays <strong>of</strong> teenyweeny<br />

yellow flowers that are both striking and sculptural in the garden. Tolerates dry summer conditions once<br />

established, requiring little summer water in full sun and gritty soil that drains well. Frost hardy to -20F,<br />

<strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 5.<br />

Compact form <strong>of</strong> our favorite boxwood, evergreen and remaining smallish, to only 5 ft tall or so and e<strong>as</strong>ily<br />

trimmed to any size. Makes a perfect edging for a path or low hedge. Prefers well-drained soil in sun to part<br />

shade, dappled or afternoon shade and enjoys regular water in summer drought tolerant if well established<br />

with deep roots. Frost hardy to -30F, <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 5.<br />

Callicarpa dichotoma 'Duet' variegated white beautyberry<br />

Recently rele<strong>as</strong>ed <strong>by</strong> the U.S. National Arboretum and shared with us <strong>by</strong> plantsman Ted Stephens, this<br />

fabulous, variegated sport <strong>of</strong> C. dichotoma f. albafructus w<strong>as</strong> discovered at Tennessee Technological<br />

University <strong>by</strong> Dr. Gary Bachman and Mr. Edgar Davis. A gracefully rounded, deciduous shrub, to 5-6 ft tall,<br />

the medium green leaves dressed with creamy yellow margins fading to white and clusters <strong>of</strong> white berries<br />

from late summer into late autumn. E<strong>as</strong>y in full sun to half shade with regular summer for best fruiting. Frost<br />

hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 5-8.<br />
