Lonicera involucrata twinberry<br />
One <strong>of</strong> our loveliest western natives, happy in northwest gardens. Deciduous shrub, to 5 ft tall x up to 10 ft<br />
wide (e<strong>as</strong>ily kept smaller), flowering from spring to early summer, the yellow, honeysuckle flowers turning to<br />
dark purple-black berries set <strong>of</strong>f <strong>by</strong> red bracts. Hummingbird magnet that tolerates sun to partial shade and<br />
moist to well-drained, droughty soil. Frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 6.<br />

Lonicera japonica 'Gold Nancy'<br />
A <strong>Cistus</strong> introduction. This golden sport, occurring in our own garden, h<strong>as</strong> retained all the vigorous<br />
characteristics <strong>of</strong> L. japonica without the propensities for leaf loss <strong>of</strong> L. japonica 'Aureoreticulata'. Reaching<br />
to 6 or 8 ft with uniform, warm golden leaves on orange-red stems and the typical, yellow-cream flowers. This<br />
h<strong>as</strong> been a beautiful addition to the honeysuckle world. For nearly full sun to dappled shade, the leaves<br />
appearing more towards chartreuse in shady conditions. Occ<strong>as</strong>ional summer water is desired. Frost hardy to<br />
<strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 6 at le<strong>as</strong>t. Named for Nancy Goldman, Portland plantswoman and lover <strong>of</strong> all things shiny or<br />
golden.<br />

If you are going to commit a horticultural faux p<strong>as</strong>, you might <strong>as</strong> well do it with this. Evergreen shrub, to 4-6<br />
ft with tiny green leaves edged yellow, remaining so in a bit <strong>of</strong> shade; variegation becomes less distinct, more<br />
overall yellow, in brightest light. ‘Lemon Beauty’ makes a very nice low hedge. As a single plant, it shines.<br />
Sun to part shade with normal water. Frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 6.<br />

A new cultivar <strong>of</strong> this very useful, small-leaved, evergreen shrub with red new growth that matures to dark<br />
green with hints <strong>of</strong> red. Seems to top out at about 4 ft or so. Useful <strong>as</strong> formal or informal hedge, accent, or<br />
foundation plant. Full to part sun with regular summer water for best appearance. E<strong>as</strong>ily pruned to shape.<br />
Frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 6.<br />

Tough and useful evergreen shrub for full sun to bright shade, this with handsome, variegated foliage, light<br />
green edged in white. Occ<strong>as</strong>ional small cream flowers produce purple berries. Good for a finely textured<br />
hedge or garden specimen. Grows slowly to 6 ft or so, but e<strong>as</strong>ily sheared to shape. Frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong><br />

A New Zealand introduction <strong>of</strong> a cl<strong>as</strong>sic, landscape plant with tiny golden leaves that hold their color well.<br />
Dense and, indeed, twiggy, and smaller than the species, to only 4 ft tall eventually. Excellent <strong>as</strong> hedging or<br />
bordering material, a bright spot in sun to part shade with average summer water. Evergreen in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 8<br />
and cold hardy to <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 6.<br />
