Halimium x pauanum<br />

Upright, evergreen shrub, to 6 x 4 ft, with gray-green foliage and, in May and June, abundant, brilliant yellow<br />

flowers, larger than most species and l<strong>as</strong>ting for several weeks. Performs best in the sun, planted in mineral<br />

soil with good drainage. Drought tolerant once established. This cross between H. halimifolium and H.<br />

l<strong>as</strong>ianthum is among the hardiest to frost: <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 8 in Mediterranean conditions.<br />

Hebe 'Great Orme' great orme hebe<br />

Evergreen shrub, a compact 4 x 4 ft, h<strong>as</strong> pale green flowers on brown stems and, from summer through<br />

autumn, pink flowers slowly fading white and providing a bi-color experience. Sun, well-drained soil and<br />

regular water. <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 8. Though from New Zealand, the cultivar name belongs to a site in Wales.<br />

Hebe 'Karo Golden Esk'<br />

Found near the Esk River, South Island, New Zealand. Low growing whipcord to 2.5 ft. Apparently a natural<br />

hybrid <strong>of</strong> H. odora and H. armstrongii. Green in summer turning gold in winter. Sun to part sun, good<br />

drainage and normal water. H<strong>as</strong> been surprisingly hardy to frost to low <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 8.<br />

Hebe 'Sapphire'<br />

Upright hebe, evergreen and bushy, to around 2 1/2 ft tall and wide, with red stems and long, shiny leaves,<br />

also reddish in new growth and showing more red tones in winter cold. Flowers in July and August are<br />

abundant 3 inch spikes <strong>of</strong> pale violet. Bright light and good drainage are best. Frost hardy in at le<strong>as</strong>t <strong>USDA</strong><br />

<strong>zone</strong> 8 and possibly colder with good drainage.<br />

Hebe imbricata<br />

From collections at Christchurch Botanical Garden in New Zealand and found on Mt. Cleugheard in<br />

Fiordland. Upright growing, rounded shrub, a "whipcord", with rigid branchlets and small, glossy, goldtinted<br />

green leaves closely adpressed to the stems (the Latin "imbricatus" means "to overlap"). White flowers<br />

are sparsely produced. Sun to part sun, good drainage and normal water. <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 8, possibly 7.<br />

Helichrysum italicum curry plant<br />

They really do have the fragrance <strong>of</strong> curry! Grows to 18" tall and wide with lovely silver leaves, followed <strong>by</strong><br />

yellow flowers in summer. Well-drained soil, sun, and little summer water once established. A very e<strong>as</strong>y<br />

plant to grow and said to be resistant to deer <strong>as</strong> well. Frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 8.<br />
