Arctostaphylos pajaroensis 'Paradise' pájaro dunes manzanita<br />

Parker’s favorite manzanita...he could actually pronounce ‘pajaroensis’. Evergreen shrub, to 3-4 ft -- 8 ft<br />

eventually, with low, ropey foliage, bright red to bronze on fall new growth, and handsome, pink flowers in<br />

winter. Full sun in well-drained, lean soil with little sumer water once established. Frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong><br />

Arctostaphylos pajaroensis 'Warren Roberts'<br />

Spreading, evergreen manzanita, this one eventually reaching 6 ft tall x 10 ft wide. Dark reddish brown trunks<br />

and stems with blue green foliage, the new leaves emerging red. Clusters <strong>of</strong> fragrant, pink flowers appear in<br />

wnter just when we need them. Full sun in well-drained soil and little water once established. Frost hardy in<br />

<strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 8.<br />

Aspidistra caespitosa 'Jade Ribbons' c<strong>as</strong>t iron plant<br />

Shared with us years ago <strong>by</strong> Barry Yinger, this small, c<strong>as</strong>t iron plant produces leaves, to only about 18" in<br />

height, in dense clusters <strong>of</strong> deep green with a satiny blue finish. Intriguingly beautiful for gardens or<br />

containers in medium shade to the deepest, darkest recesses <strong>of</strong> the garden. Fairly f<strong>as</strong>t growing in the southe<strong>as</strong>t<br />

due to hot summer nights; on the West Co<strong>as</strong>t, they are slower but worthwhile. Regular summer water in dryer<br />

climates to push them along a bit, though they can go without for long periods. Undamaged at 10 to 12F,<br />

<strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 8, if out <strong>of</strong> wind; can recover from 0F, <strong>zone</strong> 7.<br />

Aspidistra elatior 'Asahi' c<strong>as</strong>t iron plant<br />

A gorgeous selection <strong>of</strong> a c<strong>as</strong>t iron plant. Though this isn't the "biggest <strong>as</strong>pidistra in the world," it reaches<br />

about 1/2 to 2/3 the size <strong>of</strong> typical at about 18" to 25" tall with 6" wide leaves brushed cream especially<br />

towards the tips. A stunning garden or container plant that can thrive in the deepest <strong>of</strong> shade. Best if kept out<br />

<strong>of</strong> direct sunlight especially in hot climates. Frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 8; upper <strong>zone</strong> 7 with protection.<br />

Protect from slugs and snails.<br />

Aspidistra elatior 'Milky Way' c<strong>as</strong>t iron plant<br />

Aspidistra elatior 'Old-f<strong>as</strong>hioned and rarely seen variant <strong>of</strong> the c<strong>as</strong>t iron plant with yellow polka dots on<br />

narrow, shiny leaves, to 18" tall. Pretty in the garden or in containers. Consistent moisture for growth where<br />

nights are cool in afternoon shade to the darkest imaginable are<strong>as</strong>. Frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 8 to upper <strong>zone</strong><br />

7 with protection.<br />

Astelia banksii - compact form shore <strong>as</strong>telia<br />

Graceful member <strong>of</strong> the genus, this form producing spring-green, arching leaves, to only 2 ft, with striking,<br />

silver undersides and, in spring and summer, cream to chartreuse flowers. Tolerant <strong>of</strong> salt spray for co<strong>as</strong>tal<br />

gardens and e<strong>as</strong>y in any garden with regular summer water and full sun to dappled shade. Frost hardy to the<br />

mid teens, mid <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 8; h<strong>as</strong> survived 10 to 12F with some protection.<br />
