Yucca nana<br />

Exquisite and tiny yucca from the San Rafael Swell <strong>of</strong> southern Utah. The 6-8" rosettes, with their undulate,<br />

glaucous blue leaves edged white, seem <strong>as</strong> if a bunch <strong>of</strong> blue star fish were playing leap frog. Slowly<br />

multiplying to form a small colony. Spectacular in garden or in pots: we have placed ours in a stone wall.<br />

Would love bright light and free draining soil, preferably high in mineral content, but, really, not very fussy.<br />

Small 2-3 ft spikes <strong>of</strong> pearly white flowers appear on mature plants in May and June. Frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong><br />

<strong>zone</strong> 4, if not 3.<br />

Acorus gramineus 'Variegatus' gr<strong>as</strong>sy-leaved sweet flag<br />

Gr<strong>as</strong>sy, iris-like leaves with cream and golden-yellow variegation stand 12-18" tall, forming clumps to 1 ft<br />

wide or so, spreading <strong>by</strong> underground rhizomes. Summer flowers - sedge-like, tiny and green - contr<strong>as</strong>t with<br />

variegated foliage. E<strong>as</strong>y in the garden, they enjoy sun or part shade in the hottest places and moist soils, even<br />

tolerating boggy conditions or standing water to 3" deep. Should not be allowed to dry out. Evergreen in<br />

<strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 8 and root hardy to <strong>zone</strong> 5.<br />

Adiantum venustum himalayan madenhair fern<br />

Striking maidenhair fern with lacy foliage that emerges bronzy pink and ages to a gentle green that stands out<br />

again the black stems. To only 6” tall, spreading slowly <strong>by</strong> underground rhizomes to form a clump up to 3 ft<br />

across. Light shade with plentiful moisture is best and encourages f<strong>as</strong>ter growth. Evergreen to the mid teens F,<br />

mid <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 8 and root hardy to at le<strong>as</strong>t –20F, <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 5. Also does well in containers, indoors and<br />

out.<br />

Akebia quinata 'Brocade'<br />

Five-leaf akebia with fragrant flowers, interesting fruit, and variegated compound leaves in a brocade <strong>of</strong><br />

white, cream and green, the white turning rose in winter, this form remaining more evergreen than the species.<br />

Purplish, 3-petalled flowers appear in spring followed <strong>by</strong> 4" purple pods - think large, purple, lima beans -<br />

though vines do not always fruit in cultivation. A handsome, fine-textured vine, to 12-25 ft tall, in sun to part<br />

sun with regular summer water. Can be used <strong>as</strong> a vigorous, scrambling ground cover <strong>as</strong> well. E<strong>as</strong>ily frost<br />

hardy to -20F, <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 5.<br />

Arisaema candidissimum pink flowered cobra lily<br />

A cobra lily that does well in sun to light shade. This from China sends up flowers stalks in late spring to early<br />

summer topped with a pink pitcher flower, sweetly fragrant and beautifully striped with white veins. Two<br />

huge, three-lobed leaves, up to 2 ft across, follow to open beside the exotic flowers. A must have plant! E<strong>as</strong>y<br />

in sun to light or dappled shade where soil is well-drained, even rocky, and somewhat dry. Offsets quickly<br />

when happy. Frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 5.<br />
