A most attractive beavertail prickly pear, once having inhabited v<strong>as</strong>t are<strong>as</strong> <strong>of</strong> California's southern San<br />

Joaquin Valley and now reduced to but a few populations. Forms individual clumps to 18" or 2 ft, with light<br />

blue pads adorned with small, golden spines and glochids, and, in spring, light, almost orchid-like, pink<br />

flowers. Sun, lean soil and well-drained soil, and little summer water. Able to take winter dampness along <strong>as</strong><br />

the drainage is excellent. Frost hardy to at le<strong>as</strong>t <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 6.<br />

Growing to 6-8 ft and creating a lush, almost tropical texture in dappled shade with its large, deeply cut<br />

foliage and yellow flowers, single and cup-shaped appearing in late spring. Even the winter silhouette <strong>of</strong><br />

thickened stems is dramatic. As well the seed pods <strong>of</strong> late summer to autumn can be a most attractive<br />

orangey red, appearing just <strong>as</strong> bright yellow fall colors begin. Dappled shade and rich soil with regular<br />

summer water. Frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 6. Summer water <strong>zone</strong> 6.<br />

Penstemon heterophyllus 'Electric Blue' foothills penstemon<br />

Lovely small penstemon with late spring flowers <strong>of</strong> gentian blue on 18" stems that stand above clumps <strong>of</strong><br />

long, narrow, evergreen leaves, spreading to 1-1.5 ft. Found in sunny sites in the California foothills, these are<br />

e<strong>as</strong>y to grow in sun, needing no summer moisture once established but tolerating some. Well-drained soil is a<br />

must; they dislike wet feet, summer or winter. Frost hardy to -10F, <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 6.<br />

Photinia serratifolia var. serratifolia<br />

From China, this handsome and useful big, bold, glossy leaved evergreen can be grown <strong>as</strong> a large shrub or<br />

trimmed <strong>as</strong> a small tree -- to 12-25 ft x 10-20 ft. Leaves, 4-8”, emerge light green and bronze tinged maturing<br />

to dark green and leathery with serrated margins and lighter undersides. Large clusters <strong>of</strong> bright red berries in<br />

autumn follow the early spring panicles <strong>of</strong> white flowers, lovely, though their aroma is not universally<br />

admired. Sun to part shade in well-drained soil. Drought tolerant but accepts and appreciates some summer<br />

water. <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 6.<br />

Picea smithiana himalayan spruce<br />

Parker, not normally a fan <strong>of</strong> conifers, saw this species in Sacramento’s Capitol Park & fell in love with its<br />

habit <strong>of</strong> holding on to its needles well back into the large branches –looking much like a hyperm<strong>as</strong>culine hairy<br />

forearm. Branch tips are upcurved with side branchlets pendulous. Perhaps the most handsome <strong>of</strong> all conifers.<br />

Sun and well-drained soil that is somewhat moist. To 35 ft tall x 10 ft side over time. Frost hardy to -10F,<br />

<strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 6.<br />
