Nolina texana bear gr<strong>as</strong>s<br />

A bigger, bolder version <strong>of</strong> the somewhat more common and varied N. microcarpa. This Tex<strong>as</strong> native grows<br />

to a bold textured 5 ft with deep green arching leaves and creamy white flower spikes rising to 8 ft or more in<br />

spring and summer. Exceedingly drought tolerant but a little summer water would incre<strong>as</strong>e its growth rate.<br />

Sun to dappled shade. Frost hardy to about 0F, <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 7, or even a little below.<br />

Nyssa sinensis chinese tupelo<br />

A lovely and vigorous form <strong>of</strong> the deciduous swamp tupelo, this chinese species grows taller, to 40 ft or more<br />

and half <strong>as</strong> wide, with apical dominance (uprighteousness...) maintained much more e<strong>as</strong>ily than our native<br />

North American species. Sun to dappled shade. Best with summer water but tolerates some drought. Also sits<br />

happily in winter water. Fall colors are vibrant red to deep oranges to gold. Frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 7.<br />

Ophiopogon jaburan 'White Dragon' white lilyturf<br />

Lovely, variegated lilyturf, a Japanese native with white-striped, green leaves adding texture to the garden <strong>as</strong> a<br />

ground cover or specimen. Leaves can be <strong>as</strong> long <strong>as</strong> 2 ft forming clumps to 1 ft in diameters and spreading <strong>by</strong><br />

underground rhizomes. Later summer flowers add color with clusters <strong>of</strong> purple-blue flowers on 6" stems. Full<br />

to part sun with regular summer water. Frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 7.<br />

Opuntia ellisiana tigertongue<br />

Hurray for this nearly spineless, not-to-prickly, prickly pear with blue-green pads, to 6" in diameter, in clumps<br />

to <strong>as</strong> much <strong>as</strong> 3 ft tall x 4 ft wide. Late summer flowers are bright yellow. Of probable Mexican origin and<br />

found in cultivation in and about alpine Tex<strong>as</strong>, these are beautiful, architectural plants, f<strong>as</strong>t-growing and safe<br />

to have around small, curious children. Loves summer water but can fare well without. Frost hardy into the<br />

bottom <strong>of</strong> <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 7. A plant with many synonyms including O. lindheimeri var. ellisiana and O.<br />

cacanapa 'Ellisiana'.<br />

Opuntia violacea var. santa-rita<br />

Striking, round-padded, miniature tree, to 4-6 ft, this variety from Chochise Country in southe<strong>as</strong>tern Arizona,<br />

h<strong>as</strong> pads almost completely round, tinted deep pinky purple especially in winter, and few or no central spines.<br />

Flowers are dark yellow ringed with copper. Very good, if not cl<strong>as</strong>sic container specimen or garden plant in<br />

full sun with very well-drained soil and occ<strong>as</strong>ional summer water where monsoons don’t hit. Frost hardy to<br />

about 0F to –5F, <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 7, if dry.<br />

Ornithogalum viridiflorum summer hyacinth<br />

Greenish white, waxy, long-l<strong>as</strong>ting flowers, like hanging bells on stems up to 20 on stems to 24-36", add<br />

something special to the summer garden. This South African bulb h<strong>as</strong> rosettes <strong>of</strong> gr<strong>as</strong>sy, aromatic leaves<br />

forming small clumps from which the flower stems arise. Herbaceous, dying back in winter to return in spring.<br />

Full sun in rich, well-drained soil with average summer water. Frost hardy to 0F, <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 7.<br />
