Echeveria 'Morning Beauty'<br />

Small succulent, a single, crowded rosette <strong>of</strong> up to 50, glaucous blue-gray leaves with tapering tips and pink to<br />

red margins. Drought tolerant in full sun to part and well-drained soil where the roots can be kept a bit cool<br />

and occ<strong>as</strong>ional water is provided. To 1 ft tall and wide. Frost hardy to 20F, <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 9. Where<br />

temperatures drop lower, fine in containers with winter protection.<br />

Echeveria 'Violet Queen'<br />

Lovely, ground-covering succulent, to only a few inches tall, <strong>of</strong> gray-tinged-red rosettes to 6-8" across, the<br />

curved leaves creating a lotus blossom shape. Cold weather adds more red coloration. Best in full sun on the<br />

co<strong>as</strong>t or light shade inland where soil is well-drained. Drought tolerant but best with occ<strong>as</strong>ional water. Frost<br />

hardy to 20F, <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 9 and lovely in containers with winter protection.<br />

Echeveria agavoides 'Red Gem'<br />

A handsome succulent with larger than normal, red rosettes <strong>of</strong> pointed, fleshy leaves, waxy green. To 1 ft tall<br />

x 8" wide, these are larger than most echeveri<strong>as</strong>. Especially charming in summer when pink flowers stand<br />

above the rosettes on nodding stems. Sun is best with occ<strong>as</strong>ional water, allowing pots to dry out some before<br />

adding moisture. Frost hardy to 20F, <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 9, so best in container where temperatures drop below.<br />

Make room for this huge biennial in your garden. Six or more feet <strong>of</strong> furry leaves with huge upthrusting<br />

panicles <strong>of</strong> purple flowers. Stunning. Full sun, not much summer water. Hardy to 20F or so.<br />

An extraordinary addition to the dry garden, one <strong>of</strong> the plants in our garden that receives the most comment<br />

when in bloom with its huge column <strong>of</strong> dark red-pink flowers, to 4-8 ft tall, rising out <strong>of</strong> the low-growing<br />

rosette <strong>of</strong> narrow, silvery leaves. This native <strong>of</strong> the Canary Islands is a biennial, forming a handsome, 2 ft<br />

rosette in the first year and blooming spectacularly beginning in spring <strong>of</strong> the second year. Produces abundant<br />

seed to perpetuate itself, especially if surrounding soil is loose and undisturbed. Best in full sun, very welldrained<br />

soil, and little or no summer water once established. Frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 9.<br />

Ensete ventricosum 'Maurelii' red a<strong>by</strong>ssinian banana<br />

This red leaved banana is a stunning, though non-permanent, addition to your garden. Its huge translucent<br />

leaves catch the light. Grows 10-15 ft in a se<strong>as</strong>on. Sun, water and food make it happy. Overwinter indoors or<br />

treat <strong>as</strong> a temporary addition to your garden ... <strong>as</strong> it's only hardy into the mid twenties for brief periods. Frost<br />

hardy to upper <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 9.<br />
