Phytolacca americana 'Silberstein' variegated pokeweed<br />
This beautful version <strong>of</strong> a sometimes all too common American cl<strong>as</strong>sic grows to 3 - 4 ft with typical<br />
pokeweed flowers and blue-black berries, but with pink stems and creamy white green leaves. A perennial to<br />
<strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 7 or below, it will reemerge each spring with decent drainage. Part shade to full sun with<br />
generous summer water for best growth. A beautiful addition to the garden or container. Do not let set fruit in<br />
are<strong>as</strong> where extra poke salad is not needed.<br />

Pinus johannis dwarf pinon, johann's pine<br />
One <strong>of</strong> several attractive Mexican pinon pines. This 20-30 ft compact plant, collected in the mountains south<br />
<strong>of</strong> Saltillo, Mexico, h<strong>as</strong> blue-green needles, attractive flaking bark, and yes, eventually, delicious edible nuts.<br />
Though adaptable to any garden, prefers full sun and well-drained soil. Very good in desert conditions. Frost<br />
hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 7A, possibly 6b.<br />

Pinus sabiniana - OR State grayleaf pine, foothills pine<br />
Often seen among other blue leaved plants from the serpentine soils <strong>of</strong> much <strong>of</strong> California and into southern<br />
Oregon. These cuttings from a champion tree at Oregon State University in Corvallis, a tree that me<strong>as</strong>ures 4/5<br />
ft in diameter and 106 ft tall! Upright, and graceful (some old grumps say straggly) with a crooked trunk,<br />
<strong>of</strong>ten forked; dark gray, furrowed bark; and 10", silver-blue needles thinly covering the open crown. Superb<br />
back lit in winter light. Sun, lean soil, and very little summer water. Frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 7, and into<br />
<strong>zone</strong> 6.<br />

Pittosporum aff. daphniphylloides DJHT 99111<br />
Dan Hinkley's collection from Taiwan <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> our favorite genera. These can be grown into a large, multistemmed<br />
shrub or trained <strong>as</strong> a miniature, single-trunked tree, to 10-12 ft, with lance-like foliage both shiny<br />
and beautifully rain tipped. Flowers are small, greenish white, and highly fragrant appearing in mid to late<br />
spring and followed <strong>by</strong> yellow fruit. Best with some summer water in full sun to medium dappled shade and<br />
well-drained soil. Frost hardy to 0F, <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 7.<br />

Pittosporum parvilimbum<br />
A Pittosporum for <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 7! one known to have survived many harsh winters at the JC Raulston<br />
Arboretum in North Carolina. Having been introduced there <strong>as</strong> the completely unrelated Phillyrea, it w<strong>as</strong> only<br />
after many years the plant w<strong>as</strong> noticed and properly identified <strong>as</strong> this recently described and excellent species.<br />
From China, a tall, evergreen shrub, to 10-12 ft, densely branched and adorned with small, narrow leaves.<br />
Blooms in spring with small, white fragrant flowers followed <strong>by</strong> tiny, black fruits in orange capsules. Sun to<br />
part shade with regular water. A tre<strong>as</strong>ure for the Pittosporum-lover’s garden!<br />
