Agave gracilipes<br />

The name A. gracilis applies to a group <strong>of</strong> plants in northwestern Tex<strong>as</strong> into New Mexico, natural hybrids<br />

between A. lecheguilla and A. neomexicana. This forms blue-gray rosettes <strong>of</strong> narrow leaves with horizontal<br />

striping. Rosettes <strong>of</strong> about 12” make a dense colony if allowed. Bright light and average to gritty, welldrained<br />

soil. Collected in the Guadeloupe Mountains in southe<strong>as</strong>tern New Mexico at 6200 ft making frost<br />

hardiness probable well into <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 6.<br />

Agave havardiana havard agave<br />

One <strong>of</strong> the best and hardiest agaves, with olive-green or, <strong>of</strong>ten, dusty-blue, curving leaves in the cl<strong>as</strong>sic agave<br />

shape. Big, robust, and wickedly spined, usually <strong>as</strong> a solitary rosette though sometimes with pups. To 2 ft tall<br />

and wide. Best with good drainage and full sun. Frost hardy to -10F, <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 6, or lower. Found in Tex<strong>as</strong>,<br />

New Mexico, and Coahuila, Mexico.<br />

Agave mckelveyana SBH 6708<br />

This, one <strong>of</strong> our seed collections from the e<strong>as</strong>t slopes <strong>of</strong> the Hualapai mountains <strong>of</strong> northwestern Arizona at<br />

over 7000 ft, is not only a high elevation collection but represents robust plants, with narrow, blue-green<br />

leaves forming rosettes to 18 or 20", each fairly quick to <strong>of</strong>fset. Full sun to dappled shade in hot places.<br />

Wonderful in rock gardens or <strong>as</strong> a filler among other larger plants. One <strong>of</strong> the hardiest to cold, to -10º F,<br />

<strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 6, and resilient to excess garden moisture provided excellent drainage.<br />

Agave toumeyana var. bella toumey's century plant<br />

A rare and unusual plant with particularly dense rosettes, to 1 ft x 1 ft, <strong>of</strong> narrow, dark green leaves with<br />

striking white markings and decorative filifers or threads <strong>as</strong> an added attraction. A colonizer from high<br />

elevations <strong>of</strong> central Arizona, this form makes a fine rock garden specimen if excellent drainage and bright<br />

light can be maintained. Protect from excess winter moisture. Cold hardy to -10F, <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 6, or below in<br />

dry soil.<br />

Arisaema taiwanense taiwan cobra lily<br />

Extremely rare in commerce but we have a good supply from seeds collected <strong>by</strong> intrepid friends. The lizardmottled<br />

stems bursts out <strong>of</strong> the woodland ground in <strong>April</strong> followed <strong>by</strong> dazzling, cobra-lily black flowers and<br />

mind-boggling, deeply cut, acid-fl<strong>as</strong>hback leaves. For shade to dappled shade in rich soil with average <strong>of</strong><br />

summer water. Frost hardy in the ground in upper <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 6, possibly lower.<br />
