Lomatium columbianum SBH columbia desert parsley<br />

One <strong>of</strong> the most beautiful endemics <strong>of</strong> the Columbia River Gorge, this carrot relative h<strong>as</strong> leaves <strong>of</strong> frothy<br />

blue-gray, emerging from a succulent root stock in autumn and topped <strong>by</strong> a dusty pink to maroon flower in<br />

late winter and spring. Summer dormant and an e<strong>as</strong>y garden plant provided decent garden drainage and good<br />

sun. Frost hardy to really, really cold -- e.g. <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 5 or below.<br />

Lonicera nitida 'Briloni'<br />

Golden leaved honeysuckle shrub for the shaded garden. Blooms sparsely in spring, the small white flowers<br />

followed <strong>by</strong> small, bluish fruits. Slow growing, to only 3-4 ft tall and wide over time and smaller than other<br />

golden forms, with arching branches that add texture and bright golden accents. Tolerates sun but tends<br />

towards a more chartreuse color. Enjoys summer water but tolerates some drought once established. Frost<br />

hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 5.<br />

Lonicera x heckrottii 'Pink Lemonade'<br />

A bright pink flowering honeysuckle, the fragrant tubular flowers appear all summer, pink on the outside and<br />

yellow on the inside giving a bicolor appearance. This cross <strong>of</strong> three species, the European species L. implexa,<br />

L. etrusca and the American L. sempervirens, climbs to 12 ft or so in sun to part shade. Prefers rich, moist<br />

soil but tolerates some summer drought once established. Frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 5.<br />

Mahonia aquifolium 'Apollo' oregon grape<br />

Useful evergreen shrub, this one a very dwarf selection <strong>of</strong> native A. aquifolium, low-growing to only 18" tall<br />

and 5 ft. wide. E<strong>as</strong>ily trimmed. New foliage is glossy and light green to coppery-green. Large clusters <strong>of</strong><br />

bright yellow flowers in early spring are followed <strong>by</strong> blue-black edible berries. Enjoys well-drained soil in<br />

part shade to shade. Summer water, at le<strong>as</strong>t occ<strong>as</strong>ionally, improves appearance. Does well on the co<strong>as</strong>t.<br />

Frost hardy to -20F, <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 5.<br />

Maihuenia poeppigii - Lowrey clone<br />

Collected <strong>as</strong> seed 30 years ago <strong>by</strong> the Lowrey <strong>of</strong> rock garden fame, this southern Chilean cactus, appearing on<br />

volcanic slopes amid monkey puzzles and flame trees, grows to a 6” high <strong>by</strong> 3 ft wide mound with tiny fingers<br />

adorned with rice-grain-sized leaves. Cheery yellow flowers occur in spring. An e<strong>as</strong>y plant, requiring full sun,<br />

good drainage, and occ<strong>as</strong>ional summer water for quicker growth. A fine container or pot specimen or in the<br />

rock garden or rock wall. We have ours growing with the hardy bromeliad, F<strong>as</strong>cicularia bicolor for great<br />

contr<strong>as</strong>t. Expected frost hardy to <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 5.<br />
