Bold foliage for a shady spot. This garden workhorse is perfect for the hard to maintain area. Evergreen,<br />

multi-stemmed shrub to 10 ft with glossy green, palmate leaves, <strong>of</strong>ten up to 10” across. Whitish flowers (not<br />

so showy, but ‘interesting’ and great good for birds) are followed <strong>by</strong> black berries. A staple <strong>of</strong> area dentist<br />

<strong>of</strong>fice landscapes that can be transformed and transforming in the garden. Regular summer water. Fully frost<br />

hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 8.<br />

Fatsia japonica 'Variegata' variegated japanese aralia<br />

An cultivar we received via Nevin Smith <strong>of</strong> Watsonville, California. The same bold foliage <strong>as</strong> the species but<br />

nicely spl<strong>as</strong>hed with white variegation. Otherwise an evergreen, multistemmed shrub to 10 ft with panicles <strong>of</strong><br />

white flowers followed <strong>by</strong> black berries. Best in afternoon shade to shade with normal water. Frost hardy in<br />

<strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 8.<br />

Feijoa sellowiana pineapple guava<br />

This gorgeous large shrub or small tree from southwestern Brazil and northern Argentina can be maintained <strong>as</strong><br />

a shrub at 6 ft or pushed along into a tree <strong>of</strong> upwards <strong>of</strong> 12 ft. The attractions -- evergreen leaves backed in a<br />

powdery silver, orange-red shredding bark, and sweetly edible white petals surrounding a boss <strong>of</strong> red stamens.<br />

Also, delicious fruit in a good year if a partner is near<strong>by</strong>. Frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 8.<br />

Ficus afghanistanica 'Green Filigree'<br />

A <strong>Cistus</strong> introduction, the third in a serious <strong>of</strong> selections made here from this beautiful species. This form h<strong>as</strong><br />

intricately lobed, filigreed leaves <strong>of</strong> deep green. Very drought tolerant once established in sun to part shade.<br />

Eventually 15-20 ft tall, kept smaller with pruning. Frost hardy to the upper edge <strong>of</strong> <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 7 so far.<br />

From a species native to Northern India, western Iran, <strong>as</strong> well <strong>as</strong> Afghanistan.<br />

Ficus carica 'Crusader'<br />

A very old collection brought from the C<strong>as</strong>tle at Cambridge in the United Kingdom to the garden <strong>of</strong> famed<br />

Portland gardener Margaret M<strong>as</strong>on, where it performed better than in Endland's cooler climate. To 15-20 ft<br />

with voluptuous pink-tinted figs, perfect with procisuetto on a crisp October day. A Portland icon, named <strong>by</strong><br />

<strong>Cistus</strong> in concert with Margaret herself. Full to part sun and rich well-drained soil. Drought tolerant once<br />

established and frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 8, lower with winter protection.<br />

Fraxinus ornus flowering <strong>as</strong>h<br />

Medium tree, to 30-40 ft tall and wide with a rounded crown and smooth gray bark, covered with panicles <strong>of</strong><br />

fragrant white flowers in spring, striking against the dark foliage. Autumn colors can p<strong>as</strong>s through red-purple<br />

to yellow. Sun and moist, fertile soil, and protected from strong winds. Tolerates poor drainage and<br />

appreciates cool summer temperatures. Frost hardy to 10F, <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 8.<br />
