Begonia hemsleyana<br />

Very hardy begonia grown in gardens for many years. Dormant through winter, emerging in June with fuzzy<br />

red stems carrying palmate leaves, dark green spreckled white. A very nice texture for the shady, woodland<br />

garden, in moist conditions -- but not too moist. A bit <strong>of</strong> drying before watering is welcome. Requires good air<br />

circulation <strong>as</strong> well. Found at 4-6,000 ft elevation in Yunnan, China, these are frost hardy to <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 7.<br />

Berberis calliantha black-berried barberry<br />

Good foundation plant or accent for the garden, this evergreen shrub, to 3-5 ft tall x 3 ft wide but e<strong>as</strong>ily<br />

trimmed, h<strong>as</strong> small, holly-like leaves, dark green and shiny, contr<strong>as</strong>ting with the reddish brown stems. Spring<br />

flowers are light yellow, inverted cups, nearly 1" across; autumn berries are blue-black <strong>as</strong> the common name<br />

suggest. E<strong>as</strong>y in sun to light shade with some summer water. Frost hardy to 0F, <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 7.<br />

Berberis darwinii<br />

A striking barberry, the flowers, bright yellow-orange on red stems, are showy and cheerful over a long se<strong>as</strong>on<br />

in spring. Evergreen shrubs to 8 ft tall and nearly <strong>as</strong> wide, with arching branches and spiny leaves, dark green<br />

above and lighter below. Native to Chile and Argentina, these handsome plants enjoy full sun to part shade in<br />

re<strong>as</strong>onably well-drained soil with average summer water. Frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 7.<br />

Ice plant relative from South Africa, to only about 2” tall in clumps to 5-6” wide with succulent, triangular<br />

leaves. In summer, bright yellow, daisy-like flowers cover the the plant. Requires very good drainage in lean<br />

soil, sun in all but the very hottest climates, and an occ<strong>as</strong>ional watering in summer <strong>by</strong> hose or monsoon. Frost<br />

hardy to 0F, <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 7.<br />

From a 1993 collection in Coahuila, Mexico an unnamed, strap-leaved perennial to about 24,” with very pretty<br />

flowers, orange red with b<strong>as</strong>es dipped in green held on pink stems! Think hummingbirds! Frost hardy in<br />

<strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 7; evergreen to 15F. Full sun to medium shade (full shade in very hot climates) with occ<strong>as</strong>ional<br />

summer water. A very nice plant.<br />

Caesalpinia gilliesii poinciana<br />

The Brazilian bird-<strong>of</strong>-paradise. Exuberant tropical appearance belies its hardiness. Large shrub to small tree,<br />

6-10 ft. Airy mimosa like foliage with clusters <strong>of</strong> two inch pea flowers <strong>of</strong> deep yellow with red anthers<br />

protruding over 2". Gritty soil with sun and good air circulation. Watch for snails. From the Chaco <strong>of</strong><br />

southern Brazil and northern Argentina, plants have been hardy in places <strong>as</strong> cold <strong>as</strong> Denver CO, never<br />

freezing back in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 7 or above. Root hardy and flowering the same se<strong>as</strong>on in Denver (<strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong><br />

5).<br />
