A drought tolerant, wall-covering, ground-covering grape! This form, selected <strong>by</strong> Roger Raiche, h<strong>as</strong> small<br />

grapes in shades <strong>of</strong> purple-blushed-red, providing happiness for local birds - and you, too. Fall color is<br />

spectacular <strong>as</strong> well. Deciduous and vigorous but quite prunable in early spring or whenever it needs<br />

discipline. Sun to part shade in lean soil with occ<strong>as</strong>ional summer water. Reported frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong><br />

Wisteria frutescens 'Amethyst Falls'<br />

One <strong>of</strong> our most beautiful native vines, this wisteria is more dimunitive than its Asian counterparts. To 15 ft<br />

or so, free-flwoering with, indeed, amethyst flowers in mid-spring with an occ<strong>as</strong>ional repeat later. Somewhat<br />

drought tolerant but best with some summer water. Full sun. Frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 6.<br />

A woody deciduous vine that will reach 30 feet high and wide, if left to its own devices, with fragrant lilacpurple<br />

flowers in foot long pendulous clusters in spring. This variety h<strong>as</strong> also been known to rebloom in<br />

summer. Sun to part shade. Summer water. Hardy to <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 6.<br />

This large textured species from the Tex<strong>as</strong> hill country consists <strong>of</strong> slowly clumping, undulant leaves, 1 to 2"<br />

wide, <strong>of</strong> deepest green. Particularly striking when planted with silver-blues such <strong>as</strong> festucc<strong>as</strong> or other blue<br />

tinted, rosette-forming plants. An e<strong>as</strong>y care creature if provided well-drained soil, supplemental summer water<br />

in exceedingly dry places, and bright light, though at home in dappled shade if leaves do not collect in its<br />

crown. Frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 6.<br />

A <strong>Cistus</strong> Introduction, our collection from near the summit <strong>of</strong> the Chiricahua Mts., a hardy yucca with very<br />

blue-gray leaves, to 3 ft long and sharply pointed, both stiff and more flexible than other "tree" yucc<strong>as</strong>.<br />

Eventually to 10 ft tall, single-trunked in youth to about 6 ft tall x 4 ft wide, then multi-trunked. Early summer<br />

flowers are white on tall stalks. For sun to part shade. An excellent garden species, both very drought tolerant<br />

and very frost hardy, accepting temperatures to -10F, <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 6.<br />
