Chamaecyparis thyoides 'Red Star' red star white cedar<br />

A small evergreen with a columnar habit, to about 4-5 ft tall x 1.5 ft wide in 10 years, eventually 15-20 ft tall<br />

and narrow. The cultivar name ‘Red Star’ refers to the dense and delicate, star-shaped, blue-green foliage that<br />

turns to a rich, warm purple-red in winter light. Sun for best color or part shade with lean, well-drained soil<br />

and regular summer water. Frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 5.<br />

Clematis montana var. rubens 'Tetrarose'<br />

Large pink-magenta flowers with a delicate powdery fragrance bloom against the bronzy new growth in<br />

spring. The flowers are long l<strong>as</strong>ting and carried on the vine in generous m<strong>as</strong>ses. E<strong>as</strong>ily grown on a trellis or<br />

through support <strong>of</strong> a tree or other scaffolding, reaching 25 ft in time. Provide good soil, sun to part sun with<br />

summer water. Frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 5. A good cl<strong>as</strong>sic flowering vine and favorite <strong>of</strong> many.<br />

Making the rounds for a couple <strong>of</strong> years now, this mid-sized smoke bush, growing to about 8 ft, h<strong>as</strong> the richest<br />

golden-yellow leaves, that, rather than to<strong>as</strong>ting in our hot summers, burnish an ever-so-slight orange...we like<br />

that! Dense foliage produces airy pink flowers that suggest the common name <strong>of</strong> smoke bush and brilliant fall<br />

foliage colors <strong>of</strong> pink, orange, and yellow. Growing 8+ ft x 8 + ft and flowering in May-July, the shrubs like<br />

full sun to part shade, lean, well-drained soil, and some summer water - though quite drought tolerant once<br />

established. Can sulk in heavy wet clay or too much fertility. E<strong>as</strong>ily stooled to create an exuberant perennial.<br />

Frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 5.<br />

Native to northern California and southern Oregon, this slow growing cypress -- to 50 ft in several generations<br />

-- does well in tough, sunny situations <strong>as</strong> long <strong>as</strong> the soil is well-drained and it gets water until established.<br />

Foliage is Gray-blue, somewhat pendulous foliage, aromatic twigs, and red bark, are just a few <strong>of</strong> the pluses.<br />

Cold hardy to <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 5.<br />

Cylindropuntia viridiflora santa fe cholla<br />

An unusual and rare form <strong>of</strong> cholla with lovely apricot flowers surrounded <strong>by</strong> green to brownish red tepals -the<br />

colors variable and exciting. Found just north <strong>of</strong> Santa Fe, New Mexico, these shrub<strong>by</strong> creatures, to 3-4 ft<br />

tall x 4-5 ft wide, are dense with narrow, multibranched stems, each stem ending in a whorl <strong>of</strong> joints --all with<br />

elongated tubercles and and sharp spines creating a distinctly prickly texture. Blooms in July. Full sun and<br />

lean, sandy soil that drains well is best. Drought tolerant but accepts occ<strong>as</strong>ional summer water happily. Frost<br />

hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> Zone 5.<br />
