Cr<strong>as</strong>sula ovata 'Hummel's Sunset' golden jade plant<br />

Shrub<strong>by</strong> jade plant, this with leaves flushed and margined with golden yellow and copper-red along the<br />

margins. This one is a little smaller, denser, and more compact than the species, reaching only 2-3 ft high.<br />

Fine in bright light or dappled shade with little water necessary. Does not tolerate frost so best in containers<br />

to be moved indoors when weather becomes cold. Frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 10.<br />

Cr<strong>as</strong>sula ovata 'Tricolor' variegated jade plant<br />

Variegated jade plant, the dark green, succulent leaves decorated with creamy white irregular markings. A<br />

lovely shrub and slow-growing, reaching only 1 ft tall in several years, in bright light or part shade. Very<br />

drought tolerant, needing only occ<strong>as</strong>ional water in summer and almost none in winter unless grown in<br />

container and requiring a bit more frequent attention. A fine succulent shrub outdoors where temperatures<br />

don't drop below freezing. Otherwise a happy container plant spending at le<strong>as</strong>t the winter months indoors in<br />

bright light.<br />

Echeveria 'Ruffles'<br />

Ruffled red edges mark the green leaves <strong>of</strong> this rosette forming succulent, creating interesting colors and a<br />

lovely texture. To 12" tall and best in a bit <strong>of</strong> shade outdoors, otherwise bright light, with good drainage and<br />

occ<strong>as</strong>ional water in summer and much less in winter. Frost hardy to 30F, <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 10. Fine in containers<br />

and a cheerful addition to a succulent collection.<br />

Pelargonium 'Bird Dancer'<br />

A fetching Stellar geranium, the foliage shaped like a ruffled maple leaf h<strong>as</strong> bands <strong>of</strong> dark maroon color, the<br />

perfect background for the pale pink "bird's foot" flowers held in dense, frilly clusters above the dark leaves<br />

from spring to early autumn. This is a dwarf form remaining under a foot tall and wide in full sun to part<br />

shade with summer water. Frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 10 and a perfect container plant where temperatures<br />

drop below freezing.<br />

Plectranthus sp. - trailing silver leaf<br />

For gardens or containers, just for this summer <strong>as</strong> these aren't winter hardy. But the large, silver foliage with<br />

spires <strong>of</strong> blue-pink blossoms is nice just for a se<strong>as</strong>on in the garden or in containers. Full to part sun with<br />

summer water. To 6" tall x 18" wide. Frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 10.<br />

4in @ $4 Lamiaceae<br />

x G<strong>as</strong>teraloe 'Midnight'<br />

An intergeneric cross between an aloe and a g<strong>as</strong>teria, <strong>by</strong> Kelly Griffin <strong>of</strong> Rancho Soledad <strong>Nursery</strong>, resulting<br />

in a rosette-forming succulent, to 8-12" tall x 1-2 ft wide. The leaves are rough-textured with bitty bumps,<br />

dark green with red highlights. Flowers are orange in late winter, early spring. Only successful in the ground<br />

in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 10, but elsewhere, a good pot plant or year round houseplant. Bright light with well-drained<br />

soil and little water.<br />
