cowering in a long-held job, fearing that the job may change or disappear be<strong>for</strong>e<br />

retirement. It's better to get up and start running - even if you don't catch up to the<br />

cutting edge of the profession, you'll be further on than you would have been otherwise.<br />

There isn't a lot of time <strong>for</strong> professional reading in most librarians' lives, but it becomes<br />

more and more important to do it. Set up an RSS feed of some <strong>for</strong>ward-thinking blogs;<br />

follow some of the better-known tech-capable librarians on Twitter; go to conferences,<br />

attend units on products you've never heard of, and see what the vendors are<br />

presenting. And, always, be ready to change direction at a moment's notice to stay ahead<br />

of your users.<br />
