Ecologies <strong>of</strong> action 101<br />

<strong>the</strong> necessarily collective work <strong>of</strong> deciphering <strong>the</strong>ir individual experiences <strong>of</strong><br />

globalis<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>and</strong> forging from <strong>the</strong>m shared underst<strong>and</strong>ings th<strong>at</strong> can become<br />

<strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong> recognisable needs <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>refore political dem<strong>and</strong>s.<br />

However, as we demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed in Chapter 3 <strong>the</strong>re is a number <strong>of</strong> methodological<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>oretical difficulties associ<strong>at</strong>ed with analysing subterranean<br />

networks comprised <strong>of</strong> non-linear flows <strong>of</strong> people, resources, <strong>and</strong> ideas.<br />

Recent ethnographic <strong>and</strong> anthropological work has taken <strong>the</strong>se problems<br />

seriously (Mueller 2003, Chesters <strong>and</strong> Welsh 2004, Osterweil 2004a,<br />

Sullivan 2004) <strong>and</strong> wh<strong>at</strong> this work repe<strong>at</strong>edly demonstr<strong>at</strong>es is th<strong>at</strong> proximity<br />

to specific groups or organis<strong>at</strong>ions alone is analytically insufficient. To<br />

capture <strong>the</strong> dynamics <strong>of</strong> this movement(s), one must literally be adrift<br />

within <strong>the</strong> network, engaging with movement actors in m<strong>at</strong>erial <strong>and</strong> imm<strong>at</strong>erial<br />

spaces <strong>and</strong> sensitised to <strong>the</strong> emergence <strong>of</strong> qualities th<strong>at</strong> are irreducible<br />

to <strong>the</strong> sum <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> parts <strong>of</strong> th<strong>at</strong> network.<br />

Equally <strong>the</strong> key to underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>the</strong> AGM is not to be found amongst<br />

individual actors be <strong>the</strong>y groups or organis<strong>at</strong>ions. Instead, we must focus<br />

our <strong>at</strong>tention upon <strong>the</strong> processes <strong>of</strong> interaction between actors, to <strong>the</strong> iter<strong>at</strong>ive<br />

outcomes <strong>of</strong> reflexive framing <strong>and</strong> to <strong>the</strong> emergence <strong>of</strong> an ecology <strong>of</strong><br />

action within GCS th<strong>at</strong> is actualised through <strong>the</strong> AGM. If we are to reveal<br />

anything about how <strong>the</strong> AGM works, we must look to processes <strong>and</strong> to<br />

form, for it is within this hidden architecture th<strong>at</strong> something <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dynamic<br />

strength <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AGM can be grasped. The AGM displays ‘small-world’<br />

characteristics (W<strong>at</strong>ts <strong>and</strong> Strog<strong>at</strong>z 1998); it consists <strong>of</strong> hubs <strong>and</strong> nodes th<strong>at</strong><br />

are typified by a penumbra <strong>of</strong> ‘weak links’. In network analysis, this structure<br />

demonstrably allows for rapid communic<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>and</strong> is resilient to all but<br />

<strong>the</strong> most focussed <strong>of</strong> <strong>at</strong>tacks. It is also associ<strong>at</strong>ed with gener<strong>at</strong>ive processes<br />

th<strong>at</strong> lead to macro-level outcomes which are not always apparent to <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

participants. These emergent properties are <strong>the</strong> outcome <strong>of</strong> complex adaptive<br />

behaviour occurring through particip<strong>at</strong>ive self-organis<strong>at</strong>ion from <strong>the</strong><br />

bottom-up. This organis<strong>at</strong>ional form <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> behaviour th<strong>at</strong> structures it<br />

leads to <strong>the</strong> emergence <strong>of</strong> a collective intelligence th<strong>at</strong> in turn drives forward<br />

<strong>the</strong> same processes in feedback loops, leading not to entropy as one might<br />

expect in a system <strong>of</strong> this type, but r<strong>at</strong>her to substantial increases in agency<br />

<strong>and</strong> potential.<br />

The concept <strong>of</strong> emergence describes <strong>the</strong> unexpected macro outcomes<br />

produced by reflexive actors engaged in complex p<strong>at</strong>terns <strong>of</strong> interaction<br />

<strong>and</strong> exchange, outcomes th<strong>at</strong> are historically determin<strong>at</strong>e <strong>and</strong> unknowable<br />

in advance. Of interest is <strong>the</strong> apparent oper<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se feedback loops<br />

within <strong>the</strong> AGM. Here <strong>the</strong> emergent properties <strong>of</strong> acting in a decentralised,<br />

particip<strong>at</strong>ory, <strong>and</strong> highly democr<strong>at</strong>ic manner are recognised <strong>at</strong> a collective<br />

level as affording a strength, durability, <strong>and</strong> interconnectivity th<strong>at</strong> would<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rwise be absent <strong>and</strong> this feedback reaffirms <strong>the</strong> praxis th<strong>at</strong> gives rise to<br />

<strong>the</strong> emergent properties. Recent work in this field has demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

(Barabasi <strong>and</strong> Albert 1999) th<strong>at</strong> emergent properties are ubiquitous in<br />

complex systems, albeit <strong>the</strong>y <strong>of</strong>ten go unrecognised. Wh<strong>at</strong> appears to have
