from <strong>the</strong> oper<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se increasingly nomadic trends as <strong>the</strong> life-long link<br />

between individual/place/country begins to be <strong>at</strong>tenu<strong>at</strong>ed: overseas retirement;<br />

migr<strong>at</strong>ion to economies where affordable child support can secure career<br />

continuity; educ<strong>at</strong>ional mobility <strong>and</strong> web-cam prompted migr<strong>at</strong>ions are<br />

signs which, should <strong>the</strong>y become trends, will significantly transform <strong>the</strong><br />

social <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> political. Such ‘life style’ nomadism occurs alongside ‘work<br />

force’ nomadism associ<strong>at</strong>ed with global labour markets (Ob<strong>and</strong>o-Rojas<br />

et al. 2004) as <strong>the</strong> mobility <strong>of</strong> things, people <strong>and</strong> images intensifies<br />

constituting increasingly complex open systems out <strong>of</strong> once ‘closed’<br />

n<strong>at</strong>ional systems (<strong>of</strong> signific<strong>at</strong>ion).<br />

Just as n<strong>at</strong>ional media constituted <strong>the</strong> n<strong>at</strong>ions we all imagined (Anderson<br />

1989) we were part <strong>of</strong>, global media increasingly constitute <strong>the</strong> global we<br />

imagine we are part <strong>of</strong>. The production <strong>of</strong> globalis<strong>at</strong>ion has both economic<br />

<strong>and</strong> sign value (Lash <strong>and</strong> Urry 1994) but both are produced through<br />

working human agents embodying both <strong>the</strong> conscious <strong>and</strong> unconscious<br />

mind. The meanings <strong>at</strong>tached to <strong>the</strong> m<strong>at</strong>erial products <strong>of</strong> this process are<br />

constituted in multiple competing interpret<strong>at</strong>ions. An important part <strong>of</strong> our<br />

argument is th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Altern<strong>at</strong>ive Globalis<strong>at</strong>ion Movement (AGM) represents<br />

<strong>the</strong> first social expression <strong>of</strong> a global interpret<strong>at</strong>ion from ‘below’, a social<br />

force recognised as potentially ‘counter hegemonic’ by advoc<strong>at</strong>es <strong>of</strong> ‘turbocapitalism’<br />

(see Chapter 3). The multiplicity <strong>of</strong> actors within <strong>the</strong> AGM, <strong>the</strong><br />

explicit <strong>at</strong>tempt to forge a global civil society, <strong>the</strong> ‘North–South’ aspir<strong>at</strong>ions,<br />

<strong>and</strong> increasing sophistic<strong>at</strong>ion as a global network agent transcend<br />

labour intern<strong>at</strong>ionalism drawing diverse masses onto <strong>the</strong> streets far in<br />

excess <strong>of</strong> anything th<strong>at</strong> might result from work place politics short <strong>of</strong><br />

general strikes. Issues <strong>of</strong> scale apart we also argue th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> AGM both<br />

constitutes <strong>and</strong> taps into an imm<strong>at</strong>erial form <strong>of</strong> withdrawal (see Chapter 2).<br />

Deterritorialis<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

Introducing global movements 5<br />

The mobility underpinning <strong>the</strong>se emergent trends reflects <strong>the</strong> opening up <strong>of</strong><br />

physical borders through <strong>the</strong> imper<strong>at</strong>ive <strong>of</strong> deregul<strong>at</strong>ion central to <strong>the</strong><br />

prevailing capitalist axiom<strong>at</strong>ic. This places st<strong>at</strong>es in a contradictory loc<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

in terms <strong>of</strong> traditional notions <strong>of</strong> interest represent<strong>at</strong>ion. St<strong>at</strong>es simultaneously<br />

advance <strong>the</strong> globalis<strong>at</strong>ion agenda as <strong>the</strong> only game in town whilst pledging<br />

to pursue <strong>the</strong> interests <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir rapidly changing <strong>and</strong> diversifying civil<br />

societies. The resultant tensions multiply <strong>the</strong> dem<strong>and</strong>s made upon citizens<br />

who are increasingly urged to accept <strong>the</strong> responsibilities <strong>and</strong> challenges by<br />

adopting increasingly flexible <strong>and</strong> reflexive repertoires <strong>of</strong> self involving <strong>the</strong><br />

discerning exercise <strong>of</strong> increasing choice. The potential coalitions <strong>of</strong> interests<br />

multiply as <strong>the</strong> once firm boundaries constituting social groups <strong>and</strong> actors<br />

are subject to increasing rapid perturb<strong>at</strong>ion as ‘All th<strong>at</strong> is solid melts into<br />

air’. Under such conditions <strong>the</strong> notion <strong>of</strong> planes <strong>of</strong> immanence introduced<br />

by Deleuze <strong>and</strong> Gu<strong>at</strong>arri assume tangible forms as st<strong>at</strong>es <strong>and</strong> global<br />

institutions combine to define globally extensive sets <strong>of</strong> rule-bound domains
