Beyond resistance to global nexus 111<br />

activists from around <strong>the</strong> world – trade unionists; environmentalists;<br />

campaigners from various NGOs; symp<strong>at</strong>hetic writers <strong>and</strong> intellectuals,<br />

g<strong>at</strong>hered to hear <strong>of</strong> <strong>and</strong> respond to <strong>the</strong> particular situ<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>the</strong> Zap<strong>at</strong>istas<br />

had helped cre<strong>at</strong>e. In Marcos’ words:<br />

Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> best rebels from <strong>the</strong> five continents arrived in <strong>the</strong> mountains<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mexican Sou<strong>the</strong>ast. All <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m brought <strong>the</strong>ir ideas, <strong>the</strong>ir hearts,<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir worlds. They came to La Realidad to find <strong>the</strong>mselves in o<strong>the</strong>rs’<br />

ideas, in o<strong>the</strong>rs’ reasons, in o<strong>the</strong>rs’ worlds.<br />

(Marcos 2001: 121)<br />

This encounter consolid<strong>at</strong>ed links th<strong>at</strong> had already begun to emerge<br />

through websites, list-servers <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r CMC establishing a new set <strong>of</strong><br />

weak links born from reciprocal affectivities derived from <strong>the</strong> particip<strong>at</strong>ory,<br />

pedagogic <strong>and</strong> risk-taking inclin<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>of</strong> those in <strong>at</strong>tendance. The<br />

Encuentro thus acted as a ‘mirror <strong>and</strong> a lens’ in <strong>the</strong> idiom <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Zap<strong>at</strong>istas,<br />

it allowed for recognition <strong>of</strong> common <strong>the</strong>mes <strong>and</strong> experiences <strong>and</strong> sought a<br />

collective focus upon whom <strong>and</strong> wh<strong>at</strong> could be described as <strong>the</strong> ‘enemy’.<br />

The Zap<strong>at</strong>istas’ combin<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> paradoxical lyricism <strong>and</strong> particip<strong>at</strong>ory<br />

structures caught <strong>the</strong> mood <strong>of</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn activists engaged in collective<br />

struggles against <strong>the</strong> damaging economic <strong>and</strong> delocalising effects <strong>of</strong> neoliberalism<br />

<strong>and</strong> fired <strong>the</strong> imagin<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>of</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn activists seeking to rearticul<strong>at</strong>e<br />

a political project in <strong>the</strong> era <strong>of</strong> TINA (<strong>the</strong>re is no altern<strong>at</strong>ive). In this<br />

encounter <strong>the</strong>y discovered <strong>the</strong>ir targets were essentially <strong>the</strong> same, <strong>the</strong><br />

‘hylomorphic’ (Deleuze <strong>and</strong> Gu<strong>at</strong>tari 2002: 407–409) architecture <strong>of</strong><br />

globalised capitalism. The IMF, WB <strong>and</strong> WTO, as well as <strong>the</strong> proxy governance<br />

through multi-n<strong>at</strong>ional corpor<strong>at</strong>ions facilit<strong>at</strong>ed by Free Trade<br />

Agreements (FTAs), Structural Adjustment Programmes (SAPs) <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

rapacious conduct <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> corpor<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>the</strong>mselves, <strong>the</strong> only difference was<br />

in <strong>the</strong> form <strong>and</strong> type <strong>of</strong> resistances. Although resistance was occurring<br />

globally, <strong>the</strong>re was little <strong>at</strong>tempt to co-ordin<strong>at</strong>e <strong>and</strong> communic<strong>at</strong>e between<br />

movements in a cohesive or comprehensive way. In <strong>the</strong> early 1990s, swe<strong>at</strong>shop<br />

workers were rioting in Manila, Indian farmers were dismantling<br />

Kentucky Fried Chicken outlets <strong>and</strong> l<strong>and</strong> was being reclaimed across Brazil<br />

by Movimento Sem Terra (Notes from Nowhere 2003). The First<br />

Encuentro was an <strong>at</strong>tempt to name <strong>the</strong>se struggles as one, to <strong>of</strong>fer space for<br />

connections to be made, to construct an inclusive framework <strong>and</strong> to<br />

announce a space for thinking altern<strong>at</strong>ives, albeit <strong>the</strong>se altern<strong>at</strong>ives should<br />

in <strong>the</strong> Zap<strong>at</strong>istas’ words seek ‘everything for everybody <strong>and</strong> nothing for<br />

ourselves.’<br />

By promoting a process <strong>of</strong> encounter <strong>and</strong> mutual recognition <strong>of</strong> grassroots<br />

movements, in <strong>the</strong>ir sophistic<strong>at</strong>ed crafting <strong>and</strong> use <strong>of</strong> symbolic repertoires<br />

<strong>of</strong> struggle <strong>and</strong> in <strong>the</strong>ir articul<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> an immanent GCS, <strong>the</strong> Zap<strong>at</strong>istas<br />

framed resistance as process – ‘pregunt<strong>and</strong>o caminamos’ (Asking we walk).<br />

This framing <strong>of</strong> solidarity within a terrain <strong>of</strong> uncertainty <strong>and</strong> possibility
