110 Beyond resistance to global nexus<br />

many, acknowledging itself to be equal in its desire to listen <strong>and</strong> be listened to,<br />

recognizing itself as diverse in <strong>the</strong> tones <strong>and</strong> levels <strong>of</strong> voices forming it.<br />

(Closing Remarks to <strong>the</strong> First Intercontinental<br />

Encuentro for Humanity <strong>and</strong> against Neoliberalism,<br />

Subcomm<strong>and</strong>ante Marcos 2001: 122)<br />

Something in <strong>the</strong> world forces us to think. This something is an object not <strong>of</strong><br />

recognition but <strong>of</strong> a fundamental encounter.<br />

(Deleuze 1994: 139)<br />

The Zap<strong>at</strong>istas engaged in a double articul<strong>at</strong>ion defending a place-based<br />

model <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cultural <strong>and</strong> n<strong>at</strong>ural, whilst expressing th<strong>at</strong> defence as a contributory<br />

action to a network <strong>of</strong> global resistance. They sought to c<strong>at</strong>alyse<br />

self-recognition amongst movement actors <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong> potential, <strong>the</strong><br />

immanent global civil society (GCS) th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>y defined militantly as an<br />

antagonistic force for social change. In L<strong>at</strong>in America, <strong>the</strong> concept <strong>of</strong> civil<br />

society had come to st<strong>and</strong> for str<strong>at</strong>egies ‘based on <strong>the</strong> autonomous organiz<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

<strong>of</strong> society <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> reconstruction <strong>of</strong> social ties outside <strong>the</strong> authoritarian<br />

st<strong>at</strong>e’ (Ar<strong>at</strong>o 1995: 19). The Zap<strong>at</strong>istas’ definition <strong>and</strong> broadening <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> concept to <strong>the</strong> global emerges in this context, <strong>and</strong> as such describes<br />

something different from <strong>the</strong> dominant concept <strong>of</strong> civil society as <strong>the</strong> associ<strong>at</strong>ional<br />

space medi<strong>at</strong>ing between family <strong>and</strong> st<strong>at</strong>e. Instead, <strong>the</strong> immanent<br />

GCS th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Zap<strong>at</strong>istas sought to actualise is conceived as a networked,<br />

self-organised <strong>and</strong> reflexive project <strong>of</strong> inter-linked experiments in autonomy<br />

<strong>and</strong> co-oper<strong>at</strong>ion. A project to affirm <strong>the</strong> possibility <strong>of</strong> ‘dignity’ th<strong>at</strong><br />

‘already exists in <strong>the</strong> form <strong>of</strong> being denied’ (Holloway 2002: 213) where<br />

repression is neg<strong>at</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong> diffusion <strong>of</strong> power <strong>and</strong> movements strive for<br />

dissolution r<strong>at</strong>her than capture <strong>of</strong> st<strong>at</strong>e appar<strong>at</strong>us. The struggle <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Zap<strong>at</strong>istas <strong>the</strong>refore counterpoises means against ends, advoc<strong>at</strong>ing a form<br />

<strong>of</strong> a radically democr<strong>at</strong>ic praxis towards <strong>the</strong> emergence <strong>of</strong> a public sphere,<br />

constituted by <strong>and</strong> from struggle:<br />

And its result will not be <strong>the</strong> victory <strong>of</strong> a party, an organis<strong>at</strong>ion, or an<br />

alliance <strong>of</strong> triumphant organis<strong>at</strong>ions with <strong>the</strong>ir own specific social<br />

proposal, but r<strong>at</strong>her a democr<strong>at</strong>ic space for resolving <strong>the</strong> confront<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

<strong>of</strong> various political proposals.<br />

(Zap<strong>at</strong>ista Communiqué, 20 January 1994)<br />

This conceptualis<strong>at</strong>ion prefigures <strong>the</strong> emergence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Social</strong> Forum<br />

movement <strong>and</strong> it suggests a process model <strong>of</strong> a particip<strong>at</strong>ory <strong>and</strong> deliber<strong>at</strong>ive<br />

space th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Zap<strong>at</strong>istas reasoned might act as a break upon neoliberal<br />

globalis<strong>at</strong>ion. The Zap<strong>at</strong>istas’ successes in utilising <strong>the</strong> interventions<br />

<strong>of</strong> this ill-defined sector as a defence against military aggression provided a<br />

r<strong>at</strong>ionale for this str<strong>at</strong>egy. Once defined, this GCS was invited to Chiapas,<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Zap<strong>at</strong>ista ‘reality’ in a place <strong>of</strong> th<strong>at</strong> name – La Realidad. Here, in <strong>the</strong><br />

‘First Intercontinental Encuentro for Humanity <strong>and</strong> Against Neo-liberalism’
