<strong>the</strong>refore contingent upon cultural norms, <strong>the</strong>se rules include r<strong>at</strong>es <strong>of</strong> return,<br />
amortis<strong>at</strong>ion periods, forms <strong>of</strong> ownership, liability <strong>and</strong> so on. These are <strong>the</strong><br />
social constructs shaping market form<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> currently exploit<strong>at</strong>ive<br />
rel<strong>at</strong>ions associ<strong>at</strong>ed with ‘turbo-capitalism’, which are consolid<strong>at</strong>ed within<br />
legal traditions where <strong>the</strong> sanctity <strong>of</strong> priv<strong>at</strong>e property represents <strong>the</strong><br />
axiom<strong>at</strong>ic orchestr<strong>at</strong>ing <strong>the</strong> entire assemblage. The exploit<strong>at</strong>ive intensity<br />
associ<strong>at</strong>ed with <strong>the</strong>se constructs increases with distance from <strong>the</strong> centres <strong>of</strong><br />
modernity but <strong>the</strong> underlying an<strong>at</strong>omy <strong>of</strong> priorities remains <strong>the</strong> same.<br />
It is worth noting th<strong>at</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>it before people <strong>and</strong> planet <strong>and</strong> innov<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
within existing supply chains are habits <strong>of</strong> mind th<strong>at</strong> produce incremental<br />
refinement <strong>of</strong> established technologies <strong>and</strong> techniques consolid<strong>at</strong>ed in <strong>the</strong><br />
nineteenth century. These habits <strong>and</strong> rel<strong>at</strong>ions were formalised in rel<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
to <strong>the</strong> production <strong>of</strong> m<strong>at</strong>erial products but extend now to an era where<br />
imm<strong>at</strong>erial labour has become an increasingly important phenomenon <strong>and</strong><br />
imm<strong>at</strong>erial products increasingly problem<strong>at</strong>ise <strong>the</strong>se constructs. Compare<br />
buying a pressed vinyl record to downloading a digital signal through<br />
peer-2-peer file sharing <strong>and</strong> one arrives <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> situ<strong>at</strong>ion where Sony takes its<br />
consumers to court. Commodified pl<strong>at</strong>forms (e.g. MP3 players) <strong>and</strong> imm<strong>at</strong>erial<br />
exchange (P2P Networks) have thus perturb<strong>at</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> rel<strong>at</strong>ions governing<br />
<strong>the</strong> exchange <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> product <strong>of</strong> imm<strong>at</strong>erial labour (e.g. music). The hacking,<br />
replic<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>and</strong> assimil<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> imm<strong>at</strong>erial product is in its infancy but is<br />
growing precisely because <strong>the</strong> manipul<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> inform<strong>at</strong>ion (electronic,<br />
genetic etc.) remains embedded within established commercial rel<strong>at</strong>ions<br />
underpinned by <strong>the</strong> notion <strong>of</strong> an abstract self-interest maximising individual.<br />
Established habits <strong>of</strong> mind typically incorpor<strong>at</strong>e innov<strong>at</strong>ions within <strong>the</strong><br />
familiar resulting in inappropri<strong>at</strong>e initial applic<strong>at</strong>ions, an area where<br />
computing st<strong>and</strong>s out as a particularly clear example (Levy 1984), with sustainable<br />
energy production being ano<strong>the</strong>r. For instance, market-led wind<br />
turbine development requires th<strong>at</strong> gener<strong>at</strong>ors are aligned to central grid<br />
provision under r<strong>at</strong>es <strong>of</strong> return requiring turbine loc<strong>at</strong>ion in prominent<br />
windy positions, <strong>the</strong>reby fuelling controversy over <strong>the</strong> damage done to <strong>the</strong><br />
aes<strong>the</strong>tics <strong>of</strong> wilderness. Wind farms are perceived commercially as broad<br />
equivalents to power st<strong>at</strong>ions, whilst dispersed gener<strong>at</strong>ing approaches<br />
remain <strong>the</strong> preserve <strong>of</strong> entrepreneurial margins hampered by prevailing<br />
social constructs. Until recently, reverse metering (selling surplus domestically<br />
gener<strong>at</strong>ed electricity back to <strong>the</strong> grid) was not permitted <strong>and</strong> technically<br />
difficult. The advent <strong>of</strong> micro-wind gener<strong>at</strong>or systems suitable for<br />
ro<strong>of</strong>top mounting <strong>of</strong>fers <strong>the</strong> prospect <strong>of</strong> households gener<strong>at</strong>ing significant<br />
amounts <strong>of</strong> electricity reducing dem<strong>and</strong> on centralised gener<strong>at</strong>ing systems,<br />
whilst free fuel removes a key step in prevailing supply chain, commodity,<br />
<strong>and</strong> exchange rel<strong>at</strong>ions. A shift in cultural orient<strong>at</strong>ion towards dispersed<br />
networks <strong>and</strong> autonomous production coupled to <strong>the</strong> availability <strong>of</strong> nonproprietary<br />
technologies, as is already taking place around broadb<strong>and</strong><br />
wireless technologies could quickly tip <strong>the</strong> balance with regard to p<strong>at</strong>terns<br />
<strong>of</strong> ownership <strong>and</strong> control.
