8 The map is not <strong>the</strong> territory<br />
To conclude we would like to loc<strong>at</strong>e our account <strong>of</strong> complexity <strong>and</strong> global<br />
social movement within some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> wider <strong>the</strong>oretical stakes associ<strong>at</strong>ed<br />
with complexity <strong>the</strong>ory, having demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> AGM is a social<br />
expression <strong>of</strong> complexity. As such, we build on David Byrne’s concluding<br />
conclusion th<strong>at</strong> whilst complex-based social science can inform social<br />
action such r<strong>at</strong>ional knowledge cannot be determin<strong>at</strong>e due to agency. His<br />
hope th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> agency in question be th<strong>at</strong> <strong>of</strong> ‘free-citizens’ acting as a ‘perturb<strong>at</strong>ive<br />
force which chooses <strong>the</strong> future’ (1998: 167) is embodied within<br />
<strong>the</strong> AGM. As we have argued <strong>the</strong> commitment to open processes within<br />
<strong>the</strong> AGM maximises <strong>the</strong> oper<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> weak ties, a key step in socially<br />
‘engineering’ pl<strong>at</strong>eaux optimising <strong>the</strong> potential for ‘free-acts’. Taken<br />
toge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> totality <strong>of</strong> such free acts constitutes <strong>the</strong> AGM as a particularly<br />
dense strange <strong>at</strong>tractor enunci<strong>at</strong>ing <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r worlds th<strong>at</strong> are possible.<br />
This commitment to <strong>the</strong> maintenance <strong>of</strong> open boundary conditions is a<br />
necessary condition for emergence. The resultant fluidity <strong>of</strong> network forms<br />
associ<strong>at</strong>ed with <strong>the</strong> AGM enables <strong>the</strong> declar<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> collective stakes <strong>and</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong>ir symbolic coding <strong>and</strong> deployment as free-flo<strong>at</strong>ing signs <strong>and</strong> embodied<br />
forms <strong>of</strong> expression in <strong>the</strong> ecology <strong>of</strong> action. These associ<strong>at</strong>ive forms<br />
combine multiple identities <strong>and</strong> force rel<strong>at</strong>ions spanning North <strong>and</strong> South<br />
to constitute a parallelogram <strong>of</strong> forces enabling <strong>the</strong> pursuit <strong>of</strong> common<br />
antagonistic objectives <strong>and</strong> multiple pro-active ways <strong>of</strong> becoming <strong>and</strong> intervening.<br />
The meld here includes peasant, socialist, anarchist, feminist, radical<br />
liberal <strong>and</strong> environmentalist sensibilities. These constitute innov<strong>at</strong>ive<br />
margins where <strong>the</strong> aes<strong>the</strong>tics <strong>and</strong> ethics underlying <strong>the</strong> pursuit <strong>of</strong> knowledge<br />
are driven by intensities <strong>of</strong> feeling far removed from <strong>the</strong> dangerous ‘habits<br />
<strong>of</strong> mind’ identified by B<strong>at</strong>eson.<br />
Both <strong>the</strong> technical expression <strong>and</strong> social rel<strong>at</strong>ions associ<strong>at</strong>ed with <strong>the</strong>se<br />
processes depart widely from those central to <strong>the</strong> prevailing neo-liberal<br />
axiom<strong>at</strong>ic conceived as <strong>the</strong> antagonistic o<strong>the</strong>r. The apparent marginality <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong>se actors <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir projects can make <strong>the</strong>m appear insignificant compared<br />
to <strong>the</strong> ‘cutting edge’ developments within supra-st<strong>at</strong>e scientific <strong>and</strong> technical<br />
projects <strong>and</strong> corpor<strong>at</strong>e product development systems. However, as technical<br />
innov<strong>at</strong>ions are vitally dependent upon socially negoti<strong>at</strong>ed rules <strong>and</strong> are
