deliber<strong>at</strong>e construction <strong>of</strong> spaces wherein links between diverse movements<br />

could be made.<br />

The importance <strong>of</strong> ‘weak ties’ <strong>and</strong> ‘social bridges’ for <strong>the</strong> elabor<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong><br />

communic<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>and</strong> access to resources is familiar from Granovetter’s<br />

(1973) work on <strong>the</strong> ‘strength <strong>of</strong> weak ties’ <strong>and</strong> l<strong>at</strong>terly from those elabor<strong>at</strong>ing<br />

<strong>the</strong>ories <strong>of</strong> small world networks (Barabasi 2002, Buchanan 2002).<br />

This counter-intuitive argument suggests th<strong>at</strong> it is <strong>the</strong> weak ties between<br />

people, not strong friendships th<strong>at</strong> are most important when it comes to<br />

such things as launching a new project, finding a job, <strong>and</strong> accessing news.<br />

This is because weak ties are crucial for being able to communic<strong>at</strong>e beyond<br />

one’s immedi<strong>at</strong>e social (or activist) worlds. Close friends <strong>and</strong> fellow activists<br />

almost inevitably move in <strong>the</strong> same circles <strong>and</strong> as such are most likely to be<br />

exposed to <strong>the</strong> same inform<strong>at</strong>ion. Weak ties have to be activ<strong>at</strong>ed to open<br />

new channels <strong>of</strong> inform<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>and</strong> maximize potential for agency – ties<br />

which might include e-mail contacts, people met during meetings, <strong>at</strong><br />

protests, <strong>and</strong> during g<strong>at</strong>herings. There is also a need to be able to connect<br />

with those activist hubs – individuals active within many networks (‘spiders<br />

<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> centre <strong>of</strong> many webs’) 5 networking spaces (such as fora <strong>and</strong> inform<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

exchanges), <strong>and</strong> social centres – without undue interference from<br />

structures <strong>and</strong> hierarchies or barriers to particip<strong>at</strong>ion such as class, culture,<br />

age, gender, <strong>and</strong> race th<strong>at</strong> would inhibit such connections.<br />

It is this combin<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> elements – large numbers <strong>of</strong> interacting<br />

individuals, groups, <strong>and</strong> movements constituting an open system th<strong>at</strong><br />

adapts to its environment leading to increased reflexivity facilit<strong>at</strong>ed by feedback<br />

loops <strong>and</strong> non-linear processes <strong>of</strong> interaction <strong>and</strong> iter<strong>at</strong>ion th<strong>at</strong> leads<br />

to even gre<strong>at</strong>er complexity. Pl<strong>at</strong>eaux are combin<strong>at</strong>ory expressions <strong>of</strong> complexity<br />

effects realised through assemblages <strong>of</strong> m<strong>at</strong>erial <strong>and</strong> imm<strong>at</strong>erial<br />

elements. They are shaped by <strong>the</strong> m<strong>at</strong>erial infrastructure <strong>of</strong> mobility <strong>and</strong><br />

communic<strong>at</strong>ion systems th<strong>at</strong> are a pre-requisite <strong>of</strong> a ‘network sociality’<br />

(Wittel 2001) <strong>and</strong> through <strong>the</strong>ir emphasis upon co-presence, face-work,<br />

meetings, <strong>and</strong> encounters, <strong>the</strong>y point to how <strong>the</strong>se m<strong>at</strong>erial assemblages<br />

realise <strong>the</strong> potential <strong>of</strong> small world networks. Wh<strong>at</strong> emerges is a network<br />

<strong>of</strong> networks, increasingly shaped by an eclectic mix <strong>of</strong> minoritarian subjectivities,<br />

<strong>of</strong> virtuosi, including net-workers <strong>of</strong> various kinds – artivists, hackers,<br />

medi<strong>at</strong>istas, <strong>and</strong> academivists (Notes From Nowhere 2003) – whose capacity<br />

to resist co-option by party discipline <strong>and</strong> ideological strictures is growing<br />

as a direct result <strong>of</strong> increasing complexity.<br />

Conclusion: <strong>the</strong> antagonist <strong>at</strong>tractor within<br />

global civil society<br />

Ecologies <strong>of</strong> action 105<br />

The emergence <strong>of</strong> global social movements characterised by an antagonistic<br />

orient<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir organis<strong>at</strong>ion through horizontally structured networks<br />

<strong>of</strong> real <strong>and</strong> virtual rel<strong>at</strong>ions has pr<strong>of</strong>oundly influenced <strong>the</strong> trajectory<br />

<strong>of</strong> GCS. This is discernable in <strong>the</strong> effect <strong>of</strong> movement pl<strong>at</strong>eaux, such as <strong>the</strong>
