154 The map is not <strong>the</strong> territory<br />
might be done differently, <strong>the</strong>n this is surely <strong>the</strong> central maxim – perturb<strong>at</strong>ion,<br />
bifurc<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>and</strong> emergence <strong>of</strong>ten come from micro changes in marginal<br />
loc<strong>at</strong>ions such as <strong>the</strong> interface between <strong>the</strong> laminar global flows <strong>of</strong> meaning.<br />
We have argued th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> free radicals discussed here are identifiable<br />
individuals with elements <strong>of</strong> this sense <strong>and</strong> ontological stance – individuals<br />
sensitised to aspects <strong>of</strong> planetary <strong>and</strong> social f<strong>at</strong>es which are perceived as<br />
intim<strong>at</strong>ely linked – in our terms free radicals are observable change agents<br />
in a planetary action system. We emphasise th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>re are equivalents <strong>of</strong> our<br />
free radicals in <strong>the</strong> multiple social universes constituting <strong>the</strong> postmodern<br />
condition. As <strong>the</strong> advoc<strong>at</strong>es <strong>of</strong> this cultural politics engage systemically with<br />
<strong>the</strong> various elements <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fractured st<strong>at</strong>es preoccupied with maintenance<br />
<strong>of</strong> old habits <strong>of</strong> mind, as <strong>the</strong>ir incumbents suture global flows in an <strong>at</strong>tempt<br />
to maintain discursive coherence, <strong>the</strong> resultant perturb<strong>at</strong>ions lay siege to<br />
o<strong>the</strong>r signs, symbols <strong>and</strong> moral frameworks.<br />
One domain where this is clearly visible is in <strong>the</strong> prolifer<strong>at</strong>ing <strong>and</strong><br />
intensifying contest between ‘mainstream’ <strong>and</strong> emergent sciences. As ‘Royal’<br />
science (Deleuze <strong>and</strong> Gu<strong>at</strong>tari 2002: 369) pursues a return to old ‘Big’ sciences<br />
such as nuclear power, ‘minor’ or ‘nomad’ science (Deleuze <strong>and</strong><br />
Gu<strong>at</strong>tari 2002: 361) articul<strong>at</strong>es techniques with pr<strong>of</strong>ound implic<strong>at</strong>ions for<br />
wh<strong>at</strong> it is to be human <strong>and</strong> how long it might be possible to remain human.<br />
Fledgling techniques with <strong>the</strong> potential to combine in assemblages th<strong>at</strong> permit<br />
human existence beyond a solar collapse are discernable today. The fascin<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
with <strong>and</strong> pursuit <strong>of</strong> frontiers th<strong>at</strong> has fuelled space explor<strong>at</strong>ion has<br />
assumed a military orient<strong>at</strong>ion th<strong>at</strong> is about to be transformed by <strong>the</strong> commercialis<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
<strong>of</strong> space as space tourism becomes an entrepreneurial niche.<br />
Whilst <strong>the</strong> details <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se developments cannot be addressed here, <strong>the</strong>y highlight<br />
a key tension for <strong>the</strong> environmental <strong>and</strong> social justice movements within<br />
which varying degrees <strong>of</strong> antip<strong>at</strong>hy towards technoscience exist: for example,<br />
Lyotard’s problem<strong>at</strong>ic means th<strong>at</strong> a complete rejection <strong>of</strong> technology would<br />
ultim<strong>at</strong>ely guarantee species extinction, if it became a norm.<br />
The challenge is not pro- or anti-science but <strong>the</strong> social shaping <strong>of</strong> science<br />
<strong>and</strong> technology towards collectively prioritised objectives executed in ways<br />
which do not subordin<strong>at</strong>e <strong>the</strong>se social goals to pr<strong>of</strong>it maximis<strong>at</strong>ion within<br />
corpor<strong>at</strong>e structures. In terms <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fragmented st<strong>at</strong>e, <strong>the</strong> single most<br />
important factor here is a massive reduction in <strong>the</strong> military research <strong>and</strong><br />
development burdens dedic<strong>at</strong>ed to detecting <strong>and</strong> killing human beings <strong>and</strong><br />
imposing ‘coll<strong>at</strong>eral’ damage. There is sufficient extant science to go on<br />
perfecting <strong>the</strong> practical barbarism associ<strong>at</strong>ed with n<strong>at</strong>ion st<strong>at</strong>e democr<strong>at</strong>ic<br />
systems for <strong>at</strong> least ano<strong>the</strong>r 50 years without spending ano<strong>the</strong>r Euro or dollar<br />
on more research. Whilst <strong>the</strong>re are some compar<strong>at</strong>ively minor civilian<br />
benefits from <strong>the</strong> trickle-down effect <strong>of</strong> this expenditure, <strong>the</strong>y represent a<br />
tiny fraction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> gains which could be achieved if <strong>the</strong>se were <strong>the</strong> primary<br />
objective <strong>of</strong> R <strong>and</strong> D efforts.<br />
These challenges are unfolding as complexity <strong>the</strong>ory impacts upon<br />
<strong>the</strong> n<strong>at</strong>ural sciences accentu<strong>at</strong>ing historic disciplinary tensions <strong>and</strong>
