occurred within <strong>the</strong> AGM is th<strong>at</strong> its affinity with particip<strong>at</strong>ory <strong>and</strong><br />

democr<strong>at</strong>ic means <strong>and</strong> its adoption <strong>of</strong> a decentralised praxis have encouraged<br />

organis<strong>at</strong>ional forms with emergent properties th<strong>at</strong> are politically <strong>and</strong><br />

culturally efficacious within a network society. Thus, we have seen <strong>the</strong><br />

emergence <strong>of</strong> durable networks th<strong>at</strong> are highly effective <strong>at</strong> inform<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

management, communic<strong>at</strong>ions, m<strong>at</strong>erial <strong>and</strong> symbolic contest<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>and</strong><br />

mobilis<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> local <strong>and</strong> global levels. This has been coupled with a<br />

recognition amongst certain actors <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> primacy <strong>of</strong> process in c<strong>at</strong>alysing<br />

<strong>the</strong>se effects <strong>and</strong> a prioritis<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> process as a means to maximise <strong>the</strong>se<br />

emergent outcomes.<br />

Emergence in pl<strong>at</strong>eaux<br />

In order to analyse <strong>the</strong>se processes <strong>of</strong> network interaction <strong>and</strong> emergent<br />

outcomes we are suggesting a conceptual framework th<strong>at</strong> allows descriptive<br />

<strong>and</strong> analytical purchase over two key processes in <strong>the</strong> emergence <strong>of</strong> global<br />

social movements. The process <strong>of</strong> encounter <strong>and</strong> interaction <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> process<br />

<strong>of</strong> constructing shared underst<strong>and</strong>ings within <strong>and</strong> between movements. So<br />

far, we have described <strong>the</strong> construction <strong>and</strong> iter<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> sense-making<br />

processes (reflexive framing) <strong>and</strong> we now move to consider <strong>the</strong> spaces <strong>of</strong><br />

intensive networking (pl<strong>at</strong>eaux), both rooted in a ‘minor liter<strong>at</strong>ure’ th<strong>at</strong><br />

begins with Gregory B<strong>at</strong>eson (1973).<br />

One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most interesting yet under-<strong>the</strong>orised concepts to arise from<br />

within this minor liter<strong>at</strong>ure is <strong>the</strong> concept <strong>of</strong> pl<strong>at</strong>eau(x), origin<strong>at</strong>ed by<br />

B<strong>at</strong>eson (1973) <strong>and</strong> subsequently developed by Deleuze <strong>and</strong> Gu<strong>at</strong>tari in<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir second volume on Capitalism <strong>and</strong> Schizophrenia (2002). Pl<strong>at</strong>eau has<br />

geological, m<strong>at</strong>hem<strong>at</strong>ical <strong>and</strong> figur<strong>at</strong>ive meanings but was used by B<strong>at</strong>eson<br />

to differenti<strong>at</strong>e a preference within Balinese culture for <strong>the</strong> continu<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong><br />

intensity over <strong>the</strong> transcendence <strong>of</strong> culmin<strong>at</strong>ion or climax, an orient<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

th<strong>at</strong> he noted as extending from sexuality to aggression. Deleuze <strong>and</strong><br />

Gu<strong>at</strong>tari (2002) developed this concept as an extension <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir distinction<br />

between arborescent culture (linear, binary, hierarchized) <strong>and</strong> rhizom<strong>at</strong>ic<br />

culture (multiplicitous, heterogeneous, non-linear): ‘We call a “pl<strong>at</strong>eau”<br />

any multiplicity connected to o<strong>the</strong>r multiplicities by superficial underground<br />

stems in such a way as to form or extend a rhizome’ (Deleuze <strong>and</strong><br />

Gu<strong>at</strong>tari 2002: 22).<br />

In our formul<strong>at</strong>ion we use pl<strong>at</strong>eau(x) as a descriptor for <strong>the</strong> process <strong>of</strong><br />

intensive networking in m<strong>at</strong>erial <strong>and</strong> imm<strong>at</strong>erial spaces th<strong>at</strong> occurs around<br />

nodal points <strong>of</strong> contest<strong>at</strong>ion or deliber<strong>at</strong>ion, such as protest events or social<br />

fora. This allows us to focus upon processes <strong>of</strong> territorialis<strong>at</strong>ion – <strong>the</strong> manifest<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

<strong>of</strong> networks within physically <strong>and</strong> temporally bounded spaces<br />

<strong>and</strong> lines <strong>of</strong> flight between territories – <strong>the</strong> reconfigur<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> networks<br />

through processes <strong>of</strong> encounter, <strong>the</strong> prolifer<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> weak links, <strong>the</strong><br />

exchange <strong>of</strong> knowledge <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> construction <strong>of</strong> affective rel<strong>at</strong>ionships<br />

through face-work <strong>and</strong> co-presence. These processes <strong>of</strong> physical interaction
