106 Ecologies <strong>of</strong> action<br />

siege <strong>of</strong> intern<strong>at</strong>ional trade summits or <strong>the</strong> growth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> social forum<br />

process, where <strong>the</strong> AGM has produced a surfeit <strong>of</strong> m<strong>at</strong>erial <strong>and</strong> symbolic<br />

resources th<strong>at</strong> enable <strong>the</strong> expression <strong>and</strong> linking <strong>of</strong> conflictual currents –<br />

movements, organis<strong>at</strong>ions, groups, <strong>and</strong> individuals. These pl<strong>at</strong>eaux are<br />

shaped by a number <strong>of</strong> ideological inputs, including, liberal constitutionalism<br />

(human rights, anti-corpor<strong>at</strong>ism, fair trade, democr<strong>at</strong>ic represent<strong>at</strong>ion); socialism<br />

(trade unions, welfarism, intern<strong>at</strong>ionalism); anarchism (particip<strong>at</strong>ion,<br />

direct democracy, direct action); <strong>and</strong>, ecologism (environment, sustainability,<br />

n<strong>at</strong>ure) – each <strong>of</strong> which interacts with <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs exchanging, assimil<strong>at</strong>ing,<br />

<strong>and</strong> adapting concepts, slogans, symbols <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r cognitive, emotive, <strong>and</strong><br />

affective resources.<br />

From <strong>the</strong>se ideological motifs emerges a hybrid anti-capitalism such as<br />

th<strong>at</strong> articul<strong>at</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong> AGM, albeit a minority <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir exponents would<br />

perceive <strong>the</strong>mselves to be taking an explicitly anti-capitalist position.<br />

During interactions between different groups <strong>and</strong> individuals within <strong>the</strong>se<br />

pl<strong>at</strong>eaux ‘anti-capitalism’ acts as a ‘strange <strong>at</strong>tractor’, it causes a perturb<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

in <strong>the</strong> p<strong>at</strong>tern <strong>of</strong> behaviour <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> mode <strong>of</strong> being <strong>of</strong> those bodies<br />

encountering it as a discursive practice. The iter<strong>at</strong>ive communic<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong><br />

experiences <strong>and</strong> ideas, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> formul<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> proposals ‘by movements <strong>of</strong><br />

civil society...opposed to neo-liberalism <strong>and</strong> to domin<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world<br />

by capital’ (WSF Charter <strong>of</strong> Principles) declares <strong>the</strong> stakes to be fundamental<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>refore to concern <strong>the</strong> production <strong>and</strong> exchange <strong>of</strong> crucial social<br />

<strong>and</strong> economic goods. This opens new directions <strong>of</strong> movement for civil<br />

society bodies such as NGOs, charities, <strong>and</strong> religious groupings th<strong>at</strong> would<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rwise tend towards <strong>the</strong> equilibrium <strong>of</strong>fered by norm<strong>at</strong>ive forms <strong>of</strong><br />

political engagement (e.g. institutional lobbying).<br />

This breach in <strong>the</strong> system <strong>of</strong> rel<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>and</strong> signific<strong>at</strong>ion allows for<br />

engagement, albeit briefly, in more specul<strong>at</strong>ive, dynamic, <strong>and</strong> hybrid<br />

repertoires <strong>of</strong> collective action <strong>and</strong> discursive democracy. Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se<br />

possibilities, immanent in <strong>the</strong> pl<strong>at</strong>eaux <strong>of</strong> counter-summitry, social fora,<br />

<strong>and</strong> associ<strong>at</strong>ed protest events, are realised through <strong>the</strong> passage <strong>of</strong> formerly<br />

regul<strong>at</strong>ed social actors into an open system <strong>of</strong> determin<strong>at</strong>e chaos where<br />

outcomes are likely to be unplanned <strong>and</strong> unpredictable. In this context, <strong>the</strong><br />

medium becomes <strong>the</strong> message. The model <strong>of</strong> social change implied is constituted<br />

in a process <strong>of</strong> encounter <strong>and</strong> deliber<strong>at</strong>ion sedimented in movement<br />

pl<strong>at</strong>eaux where critical discourses <strong>and</strong> affective solidarity can reconfigure<br />

non-linear networks <strong>and</strong> multiply weak links to cre<strong>at</strong>e a plane <strong>of</strong> consistency<br />

between heterogeneous actors. This does not obvi<strong>at</strong>e <strong>the</strong> need for ‘politics’,<br />

nor does it smooth away <strong>the</strong> familiar dilemmas <strong>of</strong> any organis<strong>at</strong>ional process<br />

(resources, leadership, democracy, <strong>and</strong> so forth) as we demonstr<strong>at</strong>e in <strong>the</strong><br />

Chapter 6. Instead, alongside <strong>the</strong> network form in which <strong>the</strong>y are manifest,<br />

it privileges <strong>the</strong>se processes as <strong>the</strong> locus <strong>of</strong> political action, suggesting a need<br />

for new modalities <strong>of</strong> investig<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>and</strong> a willingness to countenance<br />

<strong>the</strong>oretical excursus appropri<strong>at</strong>e to <strong>the</strong> complexity <strong>of</strong> GCS.
