7 The de<strong>at</strong>h <strong>of</strong> collective<br />
identity?<br />
Global movement as a<br />
parallelogram <strong>of</strong> forces<br />
A force is applied to ano<strong>the</strong>r force: They form a parallelogram <strong>of</strong> forces.<br />
They do not cancel one ano<strong>the</strong>r; <strong>the</strong>y are composed, according to a law. The<br />
play among forces is reformist: it produces compromises. But <strong>the</strong> game is<br />
never between two forces, it is among countless forces; <strong>the</strong> parallelogram<br />
gives rise to far more complex multidimensional figures.<br />

Introduction<br />
In this chapter we argue th<strong>at</strong> pl<strong>at</strong>eaux facilit<strong>at</strong>e <strong>the</strong> multiplic<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> forces<br />
through artisanal production in subjective, m<strong>at</strong>erial <strong>and</strong> symbolic domains<br />
with <strong>the</strong> resultant vectors expressing both force <strong>and</strong> flight, <strong>the</strong>reby exposing<br />
<strong>the</strong> axiom<strong>at</strong>ic <strong>of</strong> neo-liberalism to challenges th<strong>at</strong> cannot be met by <strong>the</strong><br />
applic<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> equal <strong>and</strong> opposite forces within <strong>the</strong> fashion <strong>of</strong> a hegemonic<br />
struggle. This ‘asymmetric’ terrain <strong>of</strong> struggle is frequently addressed by<br />
political elites through <strong>the</strong> applic<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> ‘simple’ solutions, including violent<br />
intervention by <strong>the</strong> st<strong>at</strong>e, such as <strong>the</strong> pre-emptive <strong>at</strong>tacks against protesters<br />
in Genoa (Chapter 4) or populist <strong>at</strong>tempts <strong>at</strong> assimil<strong>at</strong>ion through global<br />
governance structures. 1 This chapter explores <strong>the</strong> force rel<strong>at</strong>ions within this<br />
field <strong>of</strong> struggle by developing <strong>the</strong> account <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> antagonistic orient<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AGM (Chapter 5) <strong>and</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>r distinguishing <strong>the</strong> composition <strong>of</strong><br />
rel<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>and</strong> forces constituting <strong>the</strong> AGM (Chapter 6), by explaining how<br />
collective identity approaches to social movements are problem<strong>at</strong>ised by <strong>the</strong><br />
emergence <strong>of</strong> a global movement milieu anim<strong>at</strong>ed through pl<strong>at</strong>eaux.<br />
We argue th<strong>at</strong> through reflexive framing <strong>and</strong> pl<strong>at</strong>eaux global movements<br />
are able to hold in dynamic tension <strong>the</strong> expressive <strong>and</strong> transform<strong>at</strong>ive<br />
potential <strong>of</strong> a number <strong>of</strong> ideological <strong>and</strong> discursive traditions. Not as an<br />
integr<strong>at</strong>ed collective identity but as a parallelogram <strong>of</strong> forces th<strong>at</strong> enables<br />
<strong>the</strong> realis<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>and</strong> multiplic<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> force rel<strong>at</strong>ions through <strong>the</strong> explor<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
<strong>and</strong> actualis<strong>at</strong>ion by <strong>the</strong> AGM <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> virtual singularities (Protevi 2001:<br />
6–10) present within global civil society (GCS). Hybridity, diversity <strong>and</strong> difference<br />
combine here in forms <strong>of</strong> antagonistic collective action rendering<br />
identity <strong>and</strong> cultural politics m<strong>at</strong>erial in a proxim<strong>at</strong>e sense <strong>and</strong> highly
